The idea of becoming a pet parent is awfully alluring: Pups can be goofy, loyal, and so cute — think of the TikToks just waiting to be made. Then you do the math on the costs of raising a dog, and find out that those prices can shoot up even higher when you have your heart set on a purebred pup.
This was the conundrum one Floridian family on a budget encountered — until they discovered a significant loophole right in front of them. “We had long dreamed of welcoming a Golden Retriever into our home, with [breeder] prices typically ranging from $2,500 to $3,500,” pet parent Christy explains about her family’s decision to adopt their young Golden from the Golden Rescue South Florida. “For just an adoption fee of $800, which included her puppy vet visit and vaccines, this sweet pup became part of our family.”
This instinct to add a Golden to your family is quite a common one: Due to their genuinely warm personality and bubbling enthusiasm, this breed consistently ranks among the five most popular dog breeds in America. Despite this high demand, you’ll find countless Goldens and their adorable mixes in shelters and rescues, waiting for their forever homes. (This is true of many other popular purebreds and their mixes, too.) It’s also worth noting that adoption fees — while frequently including microchipping and vaccines — can run as low as $100. These costs can be further discounted during times of shelter overcrowding, for pups with extended shelter stays, or during shelter events (such as Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October, for instance).
Once the family welcomed Muffin into their home, they could also take pride in the fact that saving Muffin set off a cascading effect of goodness. “Muffin still has so much life ahead of her, and we look forward to each new day of adventures,” Christy enthuses. “I tell everyone I meet who expresses interest in adding a purebred dog to their family that they should strongly consider adoption or rescue.”
Not only did Christy avoid the many pitfalls of puppy mills, but she also helped free up space in a shelter or rescue for another pup-in-need to find their forever family. “There are so many animals out there, like Muffin, who through no fault of their own, end up homeless,” she continues. “Opening up your heart and home to adopt is such a rewarding experience for both the family and the animal.”
Muffin, like too many other dogs, entered the world with the odds stacked against her. At just 35 days old, she and her littermates were taken from their mother — until Golden Rescue South Florida stepped in to save the puppies, a miraculous survival story which the nonprofit, volunteer-run organization lovingly documented. Over time, by raising Muffin, they also gained valuable insight into her personality and preferences, so she’d match more naturally with pet parents.
You know that adage that good things come to those who wait? Christy can attest to that. “Our family had been following the organization’s updates on social media for about a week at that point, anxiously hoping for the chance to adopt one of the puppies.” Golden Rescue South Florida’s understanding of each pup’s unique disposition helped them place Muffin with a family that could successfully meet her needs.
“Every day since then has reinforced that adopting Muffin was one of the best decisions we ever made,” Christy says. “She is brimming with love and personality, and has truly become a cherished member of our family. Her intelligence and spunky attitude constantly make us smile. We’re so thankful Muffin became part of our lives.”
