Gulfside City Beach Park — Sanibel Island, Florida

Gulfside City Beach Park, locally known as Algiers Beach, is located on the southwest Gulf Coast of Florida. Visitors can stroll the beach or immerse themselves in nature on the shaded trail loop. Parking costs $5.

North Clearwater Beach — Clearwater, Florida

Most of Clearwater Beach, located on Florida’s Sun Coast along the Gulf, unfortunately, prohibits pups. That said, so long as you stroll north of Somerset Street, they’re welcome to join on leash. Since there aren’t length requirements, however, you can opt for a long lede that allows them to run and swim.

Bowman’s Beach Park — Sanibel, Florida

Bowman’s Beach Park is another fan-favorite, dog-friendly, sandy spot on Sanibel Island. The long stretch of beach is well regarded as the spot to find stellar shells. Just be sure to only scoop up empty shells, as removing live mollusks, sand dollars, urchins, and starfish is illegal.

Vilano Beach — St. Augustine, Florida

Peanut Island — Peanut Island, Florida

Peanut Island is located near Palm Beach. The free-to-enter island requires ferry tickets or owning a boat to access. There are no concessions on the island, so pack snacks or a full picnic meal for you and your pup.

Jacksonville Beach — Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville is a popular stop for pet parents, as the city boasts the largest urban park system in the United States, much of which is dog-friendly. If you want to swap grass for sand, head to Jacksonville Beach, where dogs are permitted so long as they remain on a leash of no more than 8 feet.

Pensacola Beach West Golf — Pensacola, Florida

Pensacola Beach West Golf is a great option for folks who like to bring their pups along for every adventure, as well as those who appreciate having a real bathroom nearby. The popular panhandle destination requires that pups be on leash, but there’s no limit to their length.

Smyrna Dunes — New Smyrna Beach, Florida 

Smyrna Dunes Park is a 184-acre inlet park that connects two Florida rivers to the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to beautiful beach access, the park has a 2.5-mile boardwalk trail loop, though some reports indicate that pups aren’t allowed on it after 10 a.m.

Haulover Park Dog Beach — Miami, Florida 

Haulover Park Dog Beach is one of Florida’s few off-leash beaches. In addition to offering pups roughly two miles of beachfront to roam, the park also has fully fenced dog runs for large and small dogs. There, you’ll find fountains, waste bags, and receptacles.

• Anything else: Dogs are permitted off-leash on the beach between lifeguard towers two and three, as well as in the adjacent small and large dog runs.

North Beach Bark Beach — Miami, Florida 

North Beach Bark Beach is another popular off-leash dog beach in Florida. Located between 80th and 81st Streets, the beach has fountains and restrooms, making it especially worthwhile. 

Know before you go:

• Leash rules: Leashes are optional from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. November through March and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. April through October. Leashes are also optional Friday through Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. November through February, and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. March through October.

• Hours: Sunrise to sunset

• Anything else: Dogs are permitted off-leash on the beach at 81st Street, as well as at the dog runs at the adjacent North Beach Oceanside Park.

Boca Raton Bark Beach — Boca Raton, Florida

The Bark Beach at Boca Raton also permits pups to enjoy off-leash play, though you’ll need to buy a permit to partake. With the permit, you’ll also get access to restrooms and fountains, so worth it in our book.

Know before you go:

• Leash rules: Leashes required to and from the beach, but not on it

• Hours: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to sunset, October 1 to September 30

• Anything else: Dog-friendly areas are between lifeguard towers 18 and 20; a permit is required.

Hobie Island Beach — Miami, Florida 

Hobie Island Beach overlooks Key Biscayne Bay and is renowned for its calm, shallow waters that are perfect for pups. Just keep in mind that the calm waters also make this area a hot spot for paddleboarders and windsurfers, so keep a close eye on your pup when they haul into the waves.
