My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

If you're looking for a spunky, intelligent pup with loads of personality and the most insanely cute ears, Erin is the one for you! We are desperately hoping someone out there will fall in love with this little firecracker, just as our volunteers have. She originally came to us back in October from Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC), after multiple adoptions and returns. Sadly, she has repeated that trend with us, being adopted out last fall and returned to SFTS in April. Since her return in April, she has only received 2 applications, and we are noticing her behavior start to change after so many months in the shelter.

Erin is a wonderful little Jack Russell mix around 5 years old. She is potty trained, crate trained, and absolutely loves going on adventures. Erin has had many doggy day outs with our volunteers and weekend stays with our fosters, and everyone raves about how wonderful she is away from the shelter and in a home. Unfortunately, when we show her to adopters she acts disinterested, which isn't received well by potential adopters. As is true with many shelter animals, Erin experiences a fair amount of kennel stress, which results in her being a bit overwhelmed during meetings with new people. But when given some time away from the shelter to decompress, she quickly warms up and becomes the most loving, sweet girl with goofy antics.

The other major hurdle for Erin is her reactivity to other dogs. She needs to be the only pup in the house, but can easily go on walks and pass other dogs when given enough space. Erin is easily motivated, and smart as a whip. Her reactivity is manageable, especially given her size, but we're sure she will make even more progress with some individualized training outside of the stressful shelter environment. With a dog as cute as her, why would you want to share your attention with another pup?!

Our staff and volunteers are noticing a considerable decline in Erin's mental health and general attitude after months in the shelter. Although we provide her with daily enrichment, lots of time in the yard, multiple walks each day, and frequent weekends away or doggy days out, each time she ends up back at the shelter and we fear she is feeling defeated. We need to find an adopter for Erin, and give her the loving home she deserves.

All of our animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on age appropriate vaccines. If you're interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website at sftsrescue.org/adoptableanimals

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The minimum requirements for adoption are:
*Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
*SFTS will verify home ownership. If renting, Landlord
approval is needed.
*ALL pets in the home must be altered, up to date on
vaccinations, and seen for regular check-ups.
*Out of state applicants are welcome, but must come to
meet and pick-up the animal. We do not ship animals.

We encourage anyone interested in adopting within the next six months to fill out a general application and get pre-approved. To fill out a general application, fill out the adoption application and make sure to indicate if you are interested in a cat or dog. When you are pre-approved the adoption process is quicker and easier.

We process the applications as they are submitted. If several applications are received for the same animal, we choose the applicant based on the best fit for the animal.

It typically takes 3 days to process an application. We prefer to contact you via email, so check your spam/junk mail folder if you haven't heard back from us.

If there is a waiting list for a particular animal we will call the next best fit candidate if our call is not returned within a few days.

Adult Dogs (over 1 year of age) - $380- $500
Puppies (under 1 year of age) - $400- $600
$25 of the adoption fee for both adult dogs and puppies
will be refunded to the adopter after you submit proof of

More about this rescue

Shelter From the Storm Animal Rescue, Inc. was form in 2005 by Allison Davies in response to the overwhelming amount of animals being euthanized in area shelters. Shelter From The Storm is an all breed cat and dog rescue and focuses on alleviating overcrowding in shelters and helping adoptable/treatable animals.

Many of our pets are placed into a home environment with a suitable foster home. Here they begin basic training, receive socialization, and learn what it's like to live in a home. We also attend to their medical needs including vaccinations, heartworm testing, feline leukemia/FIV testing, deworming, and flea/tick prevention.

In 2008, in furtherance of its mission, Spay Me! Clinic (now Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center) was opened. At the beginning, surgeries were performed once a week and gradually expanded to six days a week by the end of 2009.

Wisconsin Community Veterinary Center is open to the public, but also extends a helping hand to other rescues and shelters by offering spay/neuter services at a lower cost. Our veterinarians and staff have become skilled in high volume spay/neuter procedures and continue to expand their skill set. Additional procedures have gradually been added and now include dentals, amputations, foreign object removals, and ACL repairs, to name a few.

Our mission statement:
Shelter from the Storm is a Madison, WI based non-profit, all breed dog and cat rescue whose mission is to reduce the euthanasia rate of healthy and adoptable animals and to improve the lives of companion animals.
We do this by:
  * Finding permanent home for animals in need
* Providing support to communities who do not have
access to humane organizations
  * Educating the public on responsible pet ownership
 * Providing access to affordable spay, neuter and
veterinary care.
