Meet Phyllis!  Phyllis is a stunning young female English Mastiff.  We estimate her age around 1.5-2 years old and she's about 150 lbs. She was dumped near a farm and rescued after multiple attempts by the property owners to run her off the farm. She kept going back! Unfortunately she was chasing the cattle so not welcome to stay there :)

Since being in rescue, she has shown us her big personality.  Phyllis is incredibly smart, she's responsive to positive reinforcement and verbal correction.  She may not have not learned social skills and manners in her previous life, but she is so eager and quick to learn.  She has come a long way in short time and will continue to improve in a home that has consistency and boundaries.

Phyllis is very curious, undoubtably secondary to her intelligence, so she has been crated while alone.  Otherwise she'll find things to chew on that she shouldn't. She crates well but does whine a bit if she sees you and knows she could be with you instead.  Phyllis enjoys walks and has been learning to heel.  She was slowly introduced to her foster brother by joining him on walks for several days in a row before interacting with him.  It took Phyllis about a week to warm up to her foster brother, but now they get along just fine, without issue.  She does want to be the alpha, but that's fine with the passive resident dog. She can only be placed with a submissive dog who doesn't mind her bossiness.

We suspect that Phyllis may have had to struggle for food, she has displayed some resource guarding behavior and has been grumpy if she thinks she has to compete for her food.  We hope this will go away as she feels more secure in daily meals, but until then, we advise that she be fed alone and counters kept clear of food for potential surfing, so she knows what is hers, and what belongs to the people.

Phyllis is a gorgeous and healthy young mastiff.  She has the intelligence and potential to be a wonderful companion to a human that is committed to continuing her basic obedience.  She requires an owner with experience and is not recommended for a first time Mastiff owner. We will be requiring her adopters to enroll her in either at home training or a basic obedience class, to help ensure a successful transition. She is not recommended for homes with kids or cats.

More about this rescue

Welcome to the Great Plains Mastiff Rescue Foundation Website! Great Plains Mastiff Rescue is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization made up of volunteers dedicated to saving Mastiffs in need. Our goal is to find a forever home and family for every mastiff that we rescue. We health check each mastiff that comes into our rescue program. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, testing for worms and parasites and treatment, heartworm testing and treatment, and microchipping. Mission Statement: This Foundation aims to further the prevention of cruelty to animals with emphasis on the recovery of pets from life termination procedures and the ultimate adoption of such animals by the private sector, as well as education on how to prevent the overpopulation and unnecessary killing of animals.
