My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Carson... about a 2 year old, we are thinking possibly Male Great Pyrenees/Labrador mix, as he does have back single dew claws, around 60ish lbs who was rescued from a shelter. He was running loose as a stray for months and finally trapped and with a GRRAND volunteer until healthy. This boy had a rough start, and came to GRRAND in very poor health, BUT he is proving to have left all of that behind him, is on a healthy road and and ready to start a new life with a family who adores him!!

Late June 2024: HIS FOSTER MOM SAYS: "Alright everyone, I absolutely love my new foster dog, Carson, and wish I could adopt him. He has a phenomenal temperament which shines above, and despite of, the profound neglect he has suffered since he was a puppy. Carson had been a stray for months and had to be trapped to come into rescue. Within days of coming to me, he comes in and out voluntarily without the need of a leash, he allows me to bathe him, put a halter on him, wipe his hot spots with antiseptic wipes, greets me with a wagging tail and is the best natural leash walker I have ever fostered unless he gets spooked which is getting less and less. He continues to show ZERO fear aggression despite his very apparent fears. When frightened people and animals show one or more of the three Fs: flight, fight, or freeze. Carson will show flight and freeze but no fight. This is a testament to his AMAZING temperament! What breaks my heart is he clearly is looking for someone to love and trust and who will work provide him with the love, care and socialization he needs to overcome his fears and make him feel safe. This will require a time commitment and training. Training not only teaches a dog commands but trains the human to see what works with a particular dog, what additional training will be needed (he still needs work getting in and out of a car) and most importantly, also builds confidence in a dog, and builds trust between the dog and the human all of which helps to make a dog feel safe. Carson does have to have a diet with no dairy, beef, chicken, chicken eggs, soy, or wheat gluten due to food allergies. We are happy to report his last urinalysis came back 100% CLEAN AND CLEAR!!! I know there is someone out there that can provide Carson with his perfect furever home. Please consider whether you are that person or know of such a person... you won't be sorry"!

June 2024: His foster mom says "he is now the best leash walker I have ever fostered and can walk 4-5 miles easy. Pulls only when he gets spooked or there is an enticing smell". He prefers to walk right beside his foster mom. Perfectly housebroken and seldom bothers anything he is not suppose to. but getting better everyday. He has tested positive for Lyme disease and has been giving him medicated baths and his skin is looking so much better, but the poor nutrition had taken its toll on his body and its going to take a bit more time, but this guy is absolutely in bounce back mode and is loving life more and more each day! If you would like to donate to helping with Carson's vet care, please visit the Medical Crisis page on the GRRAND website.

May 2024: His foster mom says "I have a new GRRAND foster dog. Meet Carson, a Pyrador (Great Pyrenees/Labrador). Carson is about 60+ lbs and approximately 2 years old. He was running loose for months in Harrison County, KY before he was finally trapped. Carson came into rescue with demodex mange, severe ear infections and Lyme disease. He is looking much better now after 3 months of treatment. Carson has never met a dog he didn't like, but he is very timid around people. No aggression whatsoever, just cowers down in a corner. He will need a lot of work and socialization, but he is definitely worth it. I believe Carson will be wonderful once he comes around and starts trusting people. As terrified as he is, he's never acted aggresive or tried biting. I can't wait to see him blossom! Praying he is healthy and an allergy or poor nutrition has caused the mange".  We are happy yo hear this guy is doing so great in his foster home, and we will keep updateing as we learn more!

Carson would do best in a home with another dog. He wants to play with every dog he has come in contact with!!  He has done great with males and females, puppies and adult dogs! He will need an above ground securely fenced yard as he is considered a flight risk at this time. As far as new people, he is just like he always has been, timid until he is used to you and knows you aren't a threat. Trust is earned for him and he will not willingly let a stranger touch him. He is sweet and playful once he is comfortable with you and where he is. He is food motivated but haven't witnessed any food aggression and storms do not seem to bother him. He loves to chase tennis balls and play with the Jolly balls! As far as potty training, he came as a stray so the only house training he has is what he has picked up himself.

Stay tuned for more positive updates on Carson from his foster mom. As you can see from the pics, his hair is growing back in and he is a healthy boy running around the play yard!

More to come, but please visit GRRAND.org to donate to his care, or fill out an app to adopt!

More about this rescue

Early in 1994, members of the Greater Louisville Golden Retriever Club began to see the need for an organization to rehabilitate and find homes for displaced and abused Golden Retrievers. A number of folks in this club began organizing an ad hoc rescue group. As the number of rescues increased over a period of months, this “wet behind the ears” group came up with a name and in 1996, incorporated the organization now known as Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND). The rest, as they say, is history!
