Who is looking for a sweet, shy girl like me to join your family? My name is Anika and I’m looking for my forever home. My must-haves are a securely fenced yard and another friendly dog at home to help me continue to build my confidence. I’d also love adopters who are experienced with shy/fearful dogs. I’m 4 yrs old – and I weigh 25 lbs. SIRA rescued me from a commercial breeding facility and brought me to my foster home here in Smithville, MO. I was so scared at first – living in a home with humans was new to me. Now that I’m getting used to things, my natural curiosity and bravery are coming out! I like to play with toys and chew them, but if I sense that someone is watching me, I’ll stop and act like I was doing nothing – and maybe flash my best judgmental Shiba side-eye at them for interrupting me (especially if they have a camera – as you can see from some of my photos). I get along well with the other dogs here and even enjoy meeting other dogs in the neighborhood. I especially love snuggling with my newest foster brother, Danny. I love lazy days full of napping and exploring the house and yard. My foster home has two human kids too. I’m skittish around loud noises, but I will let both the 5 year-old and the 7 ½ year-old approach me and pet me. I’m starting to feel comfortable approaching my foster family for attention. I even let the adults hold me, but like many Shibas, will jump down once I’ve had enough. While I’ve been out on leash walks, I really prefer the freedom to run in a securely fenced back yard with no leash. I enjoy chasing the birds and squirrels, but don’t try to climb over the fence. I’m a good girl in the house. I am fully house trained and I keep to myself and don’t do any damage. I’ll tolerate my kennel for short periods of time. I’m a healthy girl – spayed and vaccinated. Home Check
After applications are reviewed/references and municipal pet limits checked, applicants are contacted to schedule a home visit interview.

Approve Application
Once an applicant becomes an approved adopter, we can work with them to match them with dogs who will thrive in their home environment.
4.
Meet the Pet
Once a match is identified, the applicant is connected with the foster home to learn about the dog and arrange a meeting.
5.
Sign Adoption Contract
Only if the foster home agrees that the match is good, then it is approved.
6.
Pay Fee
Applicants pay the adoption fee upon signing the contract.
7.
Take the Pet Home
Applicants are required to have the appropriate gear (travel crate, pet ID tags) in order to take the dog home.

SIRA's board reviews each applicant for approval and then reviews each potential match for approval. Home visit volunteers are trained. SIRA pledges to support all dogs for life and requires adopters to return dogs to SIRA if they can no longer care for them. SIRA provides a social media forum and one-on-one support to help adopters address any behavioral concerns.

Shiba Inu Rescue Association (SIRA) is a volunteer organization dedicated to saving abandoned, neglected, and abused Shiba Inu, Shiba mixes and other primitive breeds. Our rescued dogs come from commercial breeders, shelters and individual owners. We evaluate each dog for temperament and place them in nurturing foster homes where their needs, medical and otherwise, are addressed in order to prepare them to be placed in thoroughly screened, loving, lifelong adoptive homes. SIRA also works to educate the public on the Shiba Inu breed in addition to the importance of responsible pet ownership including spaying/ neutering, dog training and obtaining a dog from a reputable breeder or rescue group.
