My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Nerds

Nerds is a handsome 3-year-old gray and white neutered male who is searching for a special, understanding home. This strong and active dog thrives in the presence of patient and experienced handlers who can provide the guidance and reassurance he needs to overcome his fears.

Nerds has faced some challenges in the past. He was adopted but returned after a few months due to behavioral concerns that his previous owner found difficult to manage. In certain situations, Nerds displayed anxiety-driven behaviors, such as growling when he felt cornered or overwhelmed. He has also reacted unpredictably in public spaces, snapping or lunging when frightened by unfamiliar people or situations. These reactions stem from fear and sensory sensitivities, particularly to loud noises or sudden stimuli like car washes or van windows.

Despite these challenges, Nerds has many wonderful qualities! He enjoys playgroups and interacts well with other dogs, showing positive behavior with female dogs and only mild assertiveness with males. He loves meeting people and demonstrates no prey drive. Nerds responds well to corrections, knows basic commands like sit, come, and down, and walks beautifully on a leash. He’s also a fantastic running companion with a love for outdoor activities.

In the shelter, Nerds has been struggling. He has shown some resource guarding with his food bowl in the kennel, but outside of the shelter environment, he displays far fewer challenges. He regularly participates in outings, including visits to Baseline every Saturday and a recent trip to a Fast Cat event, where he was calm, non-reactive to other dogs, and an absolute joy to be around.

Car Companion Extraordinaire: Nerds loves car rides! Whether he’s watching the world go by or relaxing in the back seat, he’s the perfect travel buddy. At your destination, he listens to the “wait” command and sits calmly until it’s time to get out.

Great Walker and Jogger: Nerds starts his walks with some excitement but quickly settles into a nice pace. He enjoys jogging alongside you and is non-reactive to other dogs, people, or distractions.

Playtime Pro: In the play yard, Nerds loves to run around and play “catch me if you can.” While he might check out dogs in adjacent yards, he’s calm, friendly, and eventually prefers spending time with his humans, lying in the grass, giving kisses, and soaking up affection.

Well-Mannered: Nerds listens beautifully
