ABOUT GARTH
Ready for some fun? Come meet our playful, goofy guy, Garth! This 1-year-old cattle dog mix is the perfect example of his breed—he’s got a go-go-go personality that’s sure to keep you on your toes! Garth came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Alabama when they ran out of space, and even though he’s been at the shelter for a while, he’s still bursting with energy and life! In true heeler fashion, Garth is an active pup who needs a job to do. He’d make the perfect running or walking buddy, as he loves spending time outside. Garth is absolutely obsessed with toys and is very food-motivated, which makes him a dream for training! When he’s not zooming around our fenced fields, you can usually find him eagerly waiting by his kennel door, hoping for some attention. Garth is a bit excitable with other dogs, as he takes his herding instincts VERY seriously, but he’s made a few canine friends who can keep up with his energy and don’t mind his enthusiasm! After a good play session, though, this high-energy pup melts into a laid-back snuggle bug who absolutely loves belly rubs. He’s already working on some basic commands like sit, touch, down, stay, wait, and recall, and he’s been having a blast with some agility training! If you’re ready for an adventure with a playful, loving companion, Garth is your guy!
Recently, a volunteer took Garth out for a Doggy Day Out and here's what they had to say:
"He loves to play fetch, especially with his favorite firehouse toy, and he’s a pro at learning commands—he’s already mastered sit and is working on agility skills! Garth is very treat-motivated, making him eager to learn and great for training. While he’s a bit timid around loud noises, he’s a total love bug who enjoys cuddling and giving affection. Garth is great with people and most dogs (with a proper introduction) and loves outings. He’s walked in parades, gone on doggy day outs, and been well-behaved in public. He’s a fantastic car rider and loves meeting new people, including kids, though his play can be a little rough, so older children would be ideal. With his smarts, energy, and friendly nature, Garth would make a loyal, adventurous companion for an active family. He’s ready to be your new best friend!"
*While he’s still working on his manners and can sometimes be jumpy or nippy, he always means well. Because of this, Garth would probably do best in a home with older kids who can understand that he’s just excited to be around and doesn’t mean any harm.
