Who loves a golden girl? Meet KCPP`s own golden girl, Virginia. This girl is an 11 year old boxer who weighs 66 pounds. This girl came to be at the shelter when a citizen saw her being dumped from a car near the shelter. The citizen was able to collect her before she was hit by a car and bring her in. In her golden years, Virginia should be chilling in her one of many dog beds, until her food is served in her fancy dog bowl. She definitely deserves to be in a home and not the shelter. She enjoys car rides, napping, and at times, acts like a puppy at heart.
Virginia likes to take her walks at her own pace and who can blame her? This girl deserves to take her time and smell the flowers, if she chooses! Virginia has attended doggy play group and is selective with her doggy friends- she may be happiest spending her golden years as an only dog. If you have a nice, social dog- please bring them in to meet Virginia. Virginia went in a doggy day out and was great in the car. She isn’t a big treat fan, unless the treat is maybe a chicken tender or nugget, then this senior gal is IN! Also, Virginia seems to love children. She was in her glory around the kids on her DDO. We know she is gentle and relaxed and would love to have someone fall forever in love with her! She will definitely not judge you for binging shows on TV, as long as she is snoozing next to you! She recently spent an afternoon with a volunteer: “We took Virginia for a drive, and got her some McDonald’s French fries! She was a little apprehensive about eating them at first, but once she got a taste she wanted more and more! She did so good in the car as well! We took her home and gave her lots of snuggles, and she gave us so many kisses! She didn’t get up on the couch until we invited her up! We watched Bluey, and she seemed to really like it! She is so gentle, sweet and loving, and was really good about doing her business outside! She didn’t bark or pull on her leash, and she knows sit and kind of knows lay down! Virginia is the sweetest girl. She doesn’t seem to have any bottom teeth, so she wasn’t interested in treats or chewing on a toy. Virginia deserves to be in a happy home with a family who will be happy to let her snuggle with you on the couch and give you lots of kisses. She is SUCH a good, happy puppy dog!” Virginia is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines.
Her ADOPTION FEE IS WAIVED! We want all our dogs to have homes as quickly as possible. In

Thanks so much for considering adoption! At KC Pet Project we have no blanket rules. Our goal is to find the pet that is right for YOUR family. The adoption process takes about an hour and does not require you filling out any paperwork ahead of time – you’ll do that once you’ve met someone and decide it’s a good fit. If you have another dog at home, we would like to have a supervised introduction with your pet(s) and our pet. Details about the introduction process can be found below.
You can view all of our adoptable dogs online at – we update their availability and location in real time. If you see them, they are still available for adoption. When you click on their photo it will show their location. There is no appointment needed to visit our pets.
You can visit any of our three locations seven days a week and find a pet that you’re interested in, or meet someone in foster at a mutually agreed upon location. We will have you fill some things out and then go through an adoption interview with a staff member. If all goes well, we’ll send you home with them that day. They’ll have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, have age appropriate vaccines, have been heartworm tested, and have received intestinal dewormer.
Small dogs, puppies, and specialty breeds go quickly here at KC Pet Project. If your schedule allows, you are encouraged to visit our dogs here at the shelter, as we often times have these dogs but they are on stray hold. If you see a pet you are interested in but they are not currently available, you have the option of putting down an Early Bird hold. The EB hold is $50 and $25 of it is a non-refundable donation to us that gives you first right of adoption if the dog is not reclaimed, and the other $25 is deducted from the dog’s adoption fee.
All of our adopters are expected to have a proper leash and collar for their dogs or a carrier to take home cats, which can be found in the retail section of any of our locations. If you live in Kansas City, MO, you should also expect to purchase a city license tag for $12 – this is something you’ll renew each year upon vaccinating your pet.
If you need to introduce your pet(s) to our pet: We recommend visiting an animal first to make sure that it is a good candidate for your home, and so that you have free hands. If you decide you would like to proceed with a meet and greet, please bring your dog to the location where your adoption candidate lives and staff will assist you. If visiting the main shelter, please do not bring your dog into the kennel area. Instead, have someone you trust hold onto your dog and notify a staff member that you are here for the introduction, or you can leave them in your car if it is weather appropriate. KCPP staff will let your dog and our dog drag a leash and greet each other naturally, without you present so that the introduction can be as objective as possible. Please plan on separating your newly adopted dog from your current dog on your drive home (in a kennel, for example), unless you have assistance.
Adoption Fees:
Adult mixed breed dogs: $75-150
Small breed dogs and puppies: $150-300
Cats: $25-$75
Kittens: $50 – $125
