From Doko`s foster: Doko is an energetic, fun, and loving pup. His soft fur is wonderful to pet and he loves the attention. He learns and follows routines quickly. He is food-motivated when learning anything. He needs to go out to poop and then pee first thing in the morning. He is full of energy first thing in the morning, as in 0 to 100. He wants to play and get attention from his human and furry friends. Doko is a speedy eater with just a regular food bowl so having alternative ways to slow him down is helpful. He`s smart and can quickly figure out slow-feeding puzzles(rolled towel, kong-style cone, etc) but enjoys finding his food this way. He will resource guard with food and will steal other dogs` treats if not in active training mode. he will also commandeer toys and beds.
Doko drinks a lot of water and pees a lot. (he also poops a lot). He always needs to pee right after a good sleep, wrestling, or playing. He is not completely potty trained so it is important to notice and take him out frequently.
He is a sloppy drinker and leaves water everywhere as he walks away from the bowl.
When he is excited to see people, he will jump up a lot. We were working on this but his puppy energy takes over.
He knows the commands sit, down, come, and touch but is still learning. He is working on `leave it.` In about a day, he learned to stay out of the kitchen (and stay at the doorway).
He will easily go into his crate if led that way or it is part of a learned routine like bedtime. He loves to chew on soft toys, hard toys, and anything! Watch your slippers and shoes!
He loves to play with tennis balls (fetch only happens once or twice), mainly gathering them and chewing on them. He can get and run with 2 balls in his mouth and is trying for a 3rd. He likes being chased with the balls. Our dog and Doko would run around the yard after each other with the balls for many loops. Doko also loves to pick up sticks and unfortunately likes to chew them. Doko and our dog liked to wrestle and it always seemed to go on forever. His little gator teeth loved to go after Knox`s lanky legs. He really didn`t understand that he shouldn`t hang outside in the severe cold... many times I had to lure him inside with a treat because he was so focused on his ball.
Finally, we have nicknamed Doko, `Velcro`, as he loves to stick close to the human of choice. In the evening, everywhere my husband went, Doko went and was und

La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. The humane society was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, rescue animals in distress, assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, find homes for unwanted animals, and encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education.
The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. They sell gently-used goods donated by our community. We accept donations 7 days a week through our on-site drive through donation center. The Thrift Store helps to support other local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition, the Women’s Resource Center and many other non-profits.
The Shelter & Thrift Store are directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, a veterinarian was added to our staff to insure that all animals have a health and wellness check, are spayed or neutered, provided initial vaccines, implanted with a identification microchip and have the best quality care before leaving our facility. We are committed to helping animals become their best selves before they are adopted into forever homes.
