The adoption fee is waived for Duchess and ALL Desperate Housecats!

Ignore the ‘airplane’ ears that Duchess is sporting. She is always wearing them. ?? She was brought to AAC as a stray, very thin and dehydrated, and she also had a URI. She has made a complete recovery, but her shelter DVM told us that Duchess has chronic URI symptoms that may flare up occasionally (sneezing/coughing). Medical treatment will not usually be necessary.

Duchess, a lovely, unassuming girl, just wants to be petted! She is a little shy when you first meet her, so go slowly, and soon she will be beside you.

As a member of our CACTUS CAT program, Duchess is building her confidence, and she’s a quick learner. She will do fine in a home with or without a cat friend.

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.
