Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Maverick is a loving guy who enjoys snuggles without being too terribly clingy and has a gentleness that makes him less eye-catching but one that keeps growing on you until he owns your heart. He is still fairly young but mature and has a quiet confidence in himself that means he doesn’t have to make a statement and act tough. He doesn’t like conflict and is generally easy to manage. At this point he is definitely partial to women but can bond with men too when they are kind and careful with him and very patient.
He does have a fearful side when with new people and in new situations due to his history in a hoarding situation with lack of exposure to such things. Things/individuals that move fast or are unpredictable or loud bother or even scare him. He doesn’t like to be pestered by young ones of any species.
Maverick loves to run in the back yard. He hasn’t learned to play but that might come now that he has a chance to learn. He has low exercise needs and is satisfied with running in the back yard a few times per day. He is not leash trained and he needs to be taught with patience and care, so he doesn’t panic.
He appears to be intelligent and a quick learner. He has picked up house training quickly, responded well to gentle uh-uh command, and learned not to chase the house cat. Since his coat is thin due to the – now treated – flea infestation, he has been wearing a sweater in his foster home and has been very cooperative about it.
Because of his gentle and generally quiet nature (except when fearful) he might do okay in an apartment once he is comfortable on leash and with going potty outside his home.
Maverick does well with small, adult dogs in the home who do not try to play with him. Ideally, though, he will not have to share his loving owner’s attention with a lot of other dogs anymore; being a single dog or with just one or two calm companions would be best. He will occasionally growl at the other dogs in his foster home when he doesn’t want to share the lap he is cuddling in. He has not been with big dogs that we know of.
He initially chased the cats in his foster home but has gotten much better… most of the time.
He would probably not do well with toddlers and young kids but may be okay with an older child that is on the calmer side, though these things can change sometimes when a dog from a bad situation gets a chance to live in a calmer environment and then find that they enjoy kids.
When home alone he has done well uncrated for short periods (30 to 45 minutes) with other household dogs. For longer periods he has been crated to be on the safe side.
He easily jumps an 18” baby gate but does well with the outside, tall fence.
He has been fine in a car in crate.
We assume Maverick is a Yorkshire terrier mix. He is approx. 8 lbs.
