My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Some people may think they've met the best dog ever, but if they haven't met Kayla (now often known as Gertie), they don't know what they're missing. She is perfect, from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail, and all her roundness in between :)
Gertie is sweet, calm, gentle, and affectionate. She is good with all people. She is gentle with children, and she is patient and playful with other dogs. She is calm and quiet in the house, and is house-trained and non-destructive. She loves a big cozy bed and a good nap. As her oversized physique suggests, she loves to eat. She is good on a leash, and although she won't be running any speed races, she is content to go on long, slow rambles with you. She has mastered cuddling on the couch, and is ready for cozy winter movie nights. Her signature move is to flop on the ground upside down at your feet and wiggle until you rub her belly.
Kayla spent several years living at an autobody shop, where she was obviously loved, as she is well versed in human affection. However, when the shop closed down she was surrendered to the hardworking NYCACC shelter, and they asked for help finding her a new home. Large breeds, older dogs, and black dogs all have the worst chance of getting adopted, and we wanted to help this very special girl. When she first arrived her fur was black from oil, and every time you pet her, you came away with stained hands. But she settled right in, and immediately got to work proving how amazing she is. We are determined to find Kayla the incredible forever home that she deserves.

More about this rescue

Cameron Animal Hospital has been located on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, New Jersey, since 1936. The family-owned hospital is the first purposfully built animal hospital in the state of NJ, and provides veterinary services to cats, dogs, and other small animals, including rabbits, rats, ferrets, and more.

Cameron Animal Hospital is not a shelter, but works extensively with the rescue community in Essex County by providing veterinary care to local shelters, and finding homes to a variety of animals (cats, dogs, and small animals) who have come into our care.
