My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Animal Profile: Rita is an estimated 18-month old 55 lb now spayed female pitbull who was a stray intake to the high-kill Downey animal shelter in LA County. She was assessed to be social and friendly with people and dogs. We will share more about her as we get to know her in foster care.

Shelter Notes: Meet Rita, a playful and energetic dog looking for her forever home! Rita has a vibrant personality and loves to engage with other dogs, though she can be a little forward in her approach. When she first met her kennel neighbors, she was eager to interact, barking and jumping to get their attention. After a quick use of a pet corrector, Rita was calm and relaxed, greeting her handler with a wagging tail and a friendly demeanor. On walks, she is confident, leading the way with a slight pull on the leash as she bypasses other dogs without issue. In play, Rita is a fun-loving and active companion. She loves to engage in chase and wrestling games, often taking the lead in initiating play and happily allowing other dogs to chase and tackle her. She's very tolerant, even when other dogs mouth her ears or legs during play. Rita enjoys taking breaks from her playful antics to solicit petting before diving back into the action. With a social, wiggly demeanor and an affectionate, push-pull play style, Rita would do best in a home with high-energy, large dog companions. She's a wonderful, spirited dog who's ready for adoption and is sure to bring joy to an active household!

Foster Updates: Rita is very much a puppy - with all the puppy behaviors in a large body - but she has been a quick study learning manners like not mouthing and jumping up. She is very smart and eager to learn. Rita loves to snuggle and watch TV with you (yes she watches TV!) and her sweet face will just melt your heart. She LOVES toys, though she's a pitty so the stuffies don't last very long. She hasn't shown destructive tendencies aside from her toys, though. She prefers toys and affection to show or furniture chewing -- good girl! Rita has been doing well for down time in her crate and is happy to sleep there at night without a peep, except her adorable snoring. She has played well with some dogs in foster care but is too forward with others, so she will need the right match in a dog buddy; she would also thrive as the only dog. Rita will need a feline free home since she has shown some prey drive. This sweet affectionate girl will be a wonderful loving companion in a home that can provide structure, basic training, and of course snuggles!
