Original Bio:
Tinker Toy is one of our younger teenage residents. He is very loving. He came in severely under weight. He wants to stand up tall and stop you from your busy day.
He desperately looks into your eyes and tells you he loves you and won't you please please stop what you are doing and hold him?
He weighs 32 pounds and is working out every day to pack on the pounds. He really thinks some cheeseburgers would help. He is a delightful companion and has alot to tell you when you come to visit him.

Tinker has had quite the adventure since landing at HSWC as a very young and starved pup back in September (2023).
Let me get you caught up on his travels. He was a resident during the fall and being young he was often in a crate. Then some nice folks from the Dog Company sprung him and he went to the training academy with them. He was very well liked there. Then he got an application for adoption but still had to wait a bit. Finally in a new home he has had some inconsistent training and got rather confused. He has found his way back to HSWC for his second tour. He is not happy about being back. Although he remembers how great the food and treats are. Unfortunately he has fallen back into guarding his food. He needs to be the only dog in his new home. He also needs to go to a home with experienced doggy parents who are willing to Keep up with consistent training with him to continue to teach him how to be his best self.

Our adoption fees are as follows:

Puppy (0-12 months): $200
Adult Dog (1-5 years): $175
Senior Dog (6+ years): $85

Senior to Senior Program: any person over 65 yrs of age wanting to adopt any pet over 7 yrs of age: adoption fee is waived

Kitten (0-12 months): $75
Adult Cat (1-5 years): $50
Senior Cat (6+ years): $25

Adoption fee includes basic vaccinations, worming, flea treatment, feline-leukemia/FIV test, heartworm test, spay/neuter (done prior to leaving), rabies vaccination and a microchip

There is a contract and all potential adopters meet with adoption counselor to talk about application and make sure pet is good fit with the person and family. A "meet and greet" is required with all family members and the pet prior to finalizing the adoption application. If someone is adopting a dog and has another dog at home, we also require a "meet and greet" for the dogs as well. All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccinations prior to new pet going home. We do not adopt to people who will keep the pet outside exclusively. We may do a home visit either pre or post-adoption. Animals adopted from us are not be sold or given to another person. We verify all information on the adoption application and may deny an application with any false information on it. A follow up call or visit is done on all adoptions within first 30 days of adoption.

The Humane Society of Wicomico County was started in 1968 by a group of people who wanted to help improve the lives of animals. We have come a long way in our 40+ years! We have a staff dedicated to making sure the animals that come to our doors are loved and protected as they wait for their forever home. Not only are our animals vaccinated, wormed and given flea preventative, we can treat animals that come to us with mange, ringworm, heartworm and pay for animals to be seen by an outside vet should there be a need. We have an on-site spay/neuter clinic that not only is used for our animals but we also offer low cost spay/neuter for animals of the public. We provide emergency boarding for victims of domestic abuse, fire, and medical emergencies. We also have the capability to set up an off-site emergency shelter for people evacuated from their homes. In addition, we have an education program to help teach kids about being a responsible pet guardian. We work with a wide range of rescue groups and our animals have been transported from our mid-Atlantic area throughout the North Eastern United States. Our shelter is an open admission shelter and we will take in approximately 3500 animals this year. We do what we do because of our love for animals and our desire to make a difference in their lives every single day.
