Meet Baxter, the spry 10-year-old Jack Russell-Chihuahua mix He’s a loving little guy who, despite his Senior Status, has a lot of extra “zing” in his step. Baxter still has the agility of a much younger pup — “Jumping Jack” Baxter has quite the vertical leap, so a yard with a high fence and some fun agility games would be perfect for keeping him active and safe!
Baxter’s had a bit of a rough patch in the dental department — he's missing a few teeth, and his adorable hanging tongue is a testament to his charming, quirky personality. Even with a few missing teeth, his appetite for delicious wet food is as strong as ever, especially if it's paté-style food on his snuffle mat, lick mats, or soft treats. He eats smaller meals throughout the day, and those tasty snacks are just the right reward for all the hard work he’s been putting into building confidence and learning to play with toys!
Baxter’s had some bumps along the way, including a jaw injury and some anxiety, but he’s making wonderful progress. His senior bloodwork came back clear, so aside from his little quirks, he’s healthy as a horse! He’s been getting more comfortable in his environment and is slowly overcoming his fears, but he’s still working on feeling secure. Because of his anxiety, he might not be the best fit for apartment living, as he will vocalize when he misses you or feels nervous. Patience is key, but the rewards are huge — Baxter is a true lovebug once he feels safe.
Baxter thrives on routine. He’s got a bedtime routine that’s clockwork — winding down at night and sleeping soundly through the night in his crate. He’s been doing very well with alerting his foster family when he needs to potty. He’s also loving his enrichment puzzles, which help calm his nerves and allow him to be more independent.
While Baxter is still working on his boundaries, he’s an incredibly sweet boy who just wants to feel secure and loved. He’s not looking for a high-energy lifestyle, but he’s looking for someone who will give him the time, patience, and support he needs to blossom into the wonderful companion he’s meant to be. If you’re ready to give Baxter the stability he craves, you’ll be rewarded with a loyal, loving, and cuddly best friend who’s been through it all and still has so much love to give.
