My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Oakie!  This 2 year old ball of sunshine and joy, came to our family in the Fall of ’24 having just had a litter of puppies.  We knew nothing of her at that time except she had been an exceptional mama.  Fast forward a few months, teenage motherhood is in her rearview mirror – she is spayed and ready for a family of her own!  Oakie lives with a human foster mom, dad and 14 y/o brother.  Bonus human, an 85 y/o grandma who visits daily.  Oakie is pure sweetness and all love with these humans – 10/10 snuggler, social butterfly, makes everyone feel like they are the most important person on the planet.  She does not live with any other pet siblings, but not to fret, we have this social gal on the circuit of all kinds of social activities.  She trains in group classes, multiple times a week, with a local dog training company – doing basic obedience, beginner tricks and beginner agility classes.  She is a class favorite, teacher’s pet, often used as the demo dog.  She also has several dog friends whom she walks with on a weekly basis.  Her best doggie friend has had Oakie come stay with his family for a week while we were out of town.  They get along beautifully!  During that 10 day stay, we did learn that Oakie is relentless in her hard and persistent play style.  She also gave her bestie a little ‘get away from my empty food bowl’ grumble.  Nothing came of it, but things we just don’t know about her while fostering her without any other pets.  Outside of that little grumble, we have not experienced any kind of food or toy guarding.  Nor have we noticed any type of prey drive.  She is alert and excitable about other canine pals while out on walks.  She can also be a bit bouncy with happiness and excitement when saying hello to any and all humans that greet her.  We use our skills we have learned in obedience class to redirect any fixation toward other dogs as well, as work on her ‘sit’ and ‘wait’ aka: impulse control before getting to go say ‘hello’ to her human friends.  This Lil Miss Sunshine brightens any day with her healthfully confident and curious nature about the world, ready to explore!  Promptly after any adventure, she is ready for a snuggle session where she can ball up her 52 pound self and adhere herself to whatever human may be closest to her.  If you want a go anywhere, ready to love and be a best friend – Oakie may be for you!

More about this rescue

Ring Dog Rescue is a 501c3 pit bull rescue organization based out of Richmond, Virginia. Our focus is on the rescue, rehabilitation and long term placement of pit bull-type dogs in our region, as well as on the continued and ongoing education of the general public on the true character of these dogs and their role in altering the current societal perception. In 2009, Ring Dog Rescue placed 87 dogs in loving, permanent homes across Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Pennsylvania and South Carolina, representing a 26% increase in dogs adopted from 2008. Our dogs come from various sources, including local kill-shelters, as strays or even as removals from neglectful situations. Our dogs are provided full and complete medical care, including spay and neuter, vaccines, microchips and remediation of any ailments the dog may suffer, placed in foster homes, taught to be a family dog and then placed in an adoptive home, after a thorough screening process.
