My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Josephine may have been through tough times recently after being hit by a car and enduring surgery for her injuries, but this sweet girl is recovering nicely and is starting to show us her curious and silly personality.

Josephine has gotten along well with the dogs she’s met, one a low-key senior small dog and the other a high-energy golden retriever puppy. While Josephine is content to sleep away her day on the couch or a super cushy dog bed, she is starting to play with stuffed animals, prancing around the house and wagging her tail. She is also curious, pushing her way into unexplored rooms in the house and eagerly meeting new people.

Josephine has charmed everybody she met with her kind, sweet demeanor. She loves to give kisses and will paw you if she’s not getting enough pets. She is happy to sleep in her own bed at night but generally wants to be wherever people are.

She is VERY interested in neighborhood wildlife and would likely give chase to squirrels, deer, or cats so Josephine is not to be trusted off-leash outside of a fenced area. She’s a very quiet dog, we’ve yet to hear her bark, though she will sometimes whine when she’s carrying her toys around. She is 95% housetrained when kept on a schedule.

Josephine is a low-energy couch potato and would do well in a quieter home where she can spend time cuddling with her people.

Josephine is estimated to be 5 years old and 29 lbs. Since we don’t know the dog’s actual genetics, this is just a guess on breed and size when grown. All dogs have had a vet examination, are up to date on all vaccinations, have been given dewormer and heartworm prevention. Dogs over 7 months have been heartworm tested. If you are interested in meeting this dog please complete the adoption application on our website at https://safehandsrescue.org/adoption-process/ and then we can contact you about setting up a meeting.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We only adopt out animals to homes within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. Our adoption process begins with the return of our pre-adoption form, available on our website. After reviewing your application a meeting is scheduled between you and the pup, sometimes in the fosters home or at a neutral dog friendly place. If any resident dogs are in your home, it is recommended that the pups meet at this time. After the meeting a home visit is scheduled and if everything goes well with the visit the adoption is finalized at that time. A home visit by one of Safe Hands representatives is REQUIRED prior to finalizing any adoption and we must meet all members of the household where the pup will be living sometime during the adoption process.

Go meet their pets

Come on out and meet all of our great adoptable pups!! On weekends we have meetings at random locations. See our events page on our website or social media.

More about this rescue

Safe Hands is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization dedicated to saving lives and finding forever homes for stray, abandoned and surrendered dogs in high kill shelters. Of great importance to us is to reduce the stray population and need for healthy animal euthanasia through spay/neuter programs, education, and promotion of respect for the furry creatures that share our lives.

We are a small, no-kill, volunteer run organization. All of our dogs listed are in foster homes waiting to be adopted and because of this, we get to know the dogs' personalities very well and use this information to match them to an appropriate home. We do not have a physical shelter.

This rescue is not funded by public funds nor does it receive many donations so it is dependent on adoption fees to keep operating. We have a great need for foster homes. If you are interested in providing foster care, and live within an hour of the Twin Cities, please e-mail us
Donations ALWAYS needed are: dog crates, puppy pee pads, natures miracle (for pet stain removal), Nutrisource brand puppy and dog food, Lysol disinfecting wipes, paper towels, large clean towels, dog toys, leashes, collars and gas cards to help with our transports.
