My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Leon is a lover! He loves to sit on your lap--alert and ready or sound asleep and snuggled. He is a playful pup, but after playing catch for a while, he is content to wind down and be your shadow. Happiest when he is close to his humans, he is a big fan of being carried and belly rubs.

Cats and birds are too interesting to him, and he is wary of young children and resistant to new animals, so he needs to be an only dog. Leon also loves being outside and needs a home with a fenced yard with adults only who are home most of the time.

He’s always up for a ride in the car, is very treat-motivated, and is house-trained and crate-trained. At night he curls up in his crate and sleeps through for about 9.5 hours. When left alone with something to chew, he will not bother any belongings. He loves to bury himself under any soft surface, so it’s important to check under blankets and pillows to make sure he isn’t hiding there!

Anyone arriving at your house will be greeted with Leon’s guard bark; but he quickly returns to being sentinel and loves on visitors. Squirrels and rabbits don’t stand a chance in your yard when Leon goes into tiny gazelle-hunter mode and hops around following their scent!

When he is excited--like while awaiting a treat or before it’s time to get his harness on--he spins around in a few circles, sometimes even trying to catch his tail! Leon is working on ignoring other dogs while out on a walk and can be friendly to dogs once he warms up to them, but this does take him time.

This boy will be the greatest pet and a loyal companion in your home!

HISTORY
Leon was found as a stray and taken to a local shelter.

HEALTH
Leon is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, and heartworm negative.

PHYSICAL
Leon is tan and white with a pink nose, a black muzzle, and expressive ears (often one is up and the other is down!).

Adoption Process

  • Fill out an adoption interest application HERE.

  • Our goal is finding lifelong, loving homes for our animals, so we try to find the best match between animal and adopter. We can help advise you on which animals to meet based on your situation.

  • You can meet some of our animals at our weekend adoption events, or we can arrange for a meeting in the foster home. If it’s a good match, the foster parent will come to visit your home in person. This is to make sure your home is safe and secure for a new companion animal.

  • Note: IAR makes every effort to please our adopters, but our first concern must be for the animal’s welfare. We reserve the right to deny any application.

More about this rescue

IAR started with one woman's big dreams, a bigger heart, and a very distinctive purple pickup truck that helped her rescue countless of unwanted, abused, and homeless Triangle pets. Originally founded in 1994, IAR earned an official 501(c)(3) status in 1995. We are governed by a Board of Directors, managed by elected officers, and introduced IAR’s first paid position, General Manager, in June 2021. This role will assist with elevating our collective compassion to new heights and strengthening IAR’s impact as a whole.

Our mission is to rescue and provide safe and responsible care for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals. We shall strive to help all animals in need through our service programs. We will serve our communities through promotion of spay/neuter for all companion animals, and the education of children and adults in humane care, respect and responsibility for animals on this earth.
