My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Mellie – A Loyal Companion Seeking a Loving Home
Mellie is a sweet, three-year-old mixed breed who was born at our shelter and adopted as a puppy. Unfortunately, through no fault of her own, she has found her way back to us and is now looking for her forever family. Mellie has had a rough adjustment period and is understandably scared and unsure of her new surroundings, but with patience and love, we know she’ll blossom once again.

Mellie is housetrained, crate-trained, and well-behaved indoors. She’s described as a fantastic traveler and camper who will follow her person like a shadow. While she’s not overprotective, Mellie can become attached to her humans and will thrive in a home where she feels secure and loved.

Mellie does best in a calm and structured environment. She can be anxious when her routine is disrupted, and while she’s not aggressive with people, she has shown unpredictable behavior with other dogs in certain situations. She would likely do best as the only dog in the home or with a slow introduction to compatible canine companions.

She has completed obedience training and knows commands like fetch—she’s even been described as the best fetcher ever! Mellie loves playing with balls and other toys but doesn’t chew on anything that isn’t hers. She’s also very food-motivated and eats twice a day, enjoying half a cup of her food per meal.

Mellie has been on Trazodone to help manage her anxiety, which could be continued under the guidance of a vet. She’s fully vaccinated, spayed, and up-to-date on all her medical care.

If you’re looking for a loyal and affectionate companion who will stick by your side through life’s adventures, Mellie might just be the perfect dog for you. She’s ready to leave the shelter life behind and find a quiet, loving home where she can finally feel safe and cherished.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Paws and Claws Humane Society (PCHS) is a non-profit, mostly volunteer organization that rescues and shelters homeless cats and dogs until they can be adopted into their “forever” homes. We want our clients to understand that adopting and animal is a lifetime responsibility and commitment to that animal.

All prospective adopters must show (at the time of adoption) a valid drivers license or other acceptable identification to verify their name, address, and age. Adopters must be 18 yrs of age. Children under the age of 12 years old need to be present at time of viewing shelter cats or dogs.

After submitting an application, there is generally a processing period of 1-3 days in order to complete all pre-adoption checks and paperwork before an adopter may take possession of the animal.

More about this rescue

Paws and Claws Humane Society is committed to partnering with the community to shelter, protect, and seek adoptive homes for abandoned or lost companion animals.

We have served Southern Minnesota for over 30 years and we are the largest shelter in the 8 surrounding counties that does not limit the length of stay for the animals in its care.

Paws & Claws is funded completely on donations and fundraising events and receives no federal, state, county or city funds. We currently have nearly 900 dues paying members.

Paws & Claws has a community fund to help pay for the spaying and neutering of companion animals for those who cannot afford it.

We give over 40 tours and presentations annually, educating the public [including over 400 children] about proper animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals to help control the pet population in Southern Minnesota.

We have over 110 families that participate in the Guardian Angel Program [sponsoring animals] each month.

Paws & Claws will take in an injured animal and get the emergency medical care that it requires.

Local veterinarians in and around Rochester help Paws & Claws by providing over 145 free spay or neuters each year.

In a typical year the shelter will facilitate adoptions and provide care for over 600 dogs and cats.
