My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

How this pet arrived:
This pet was brought in bya community member on 12/20/2024.

Why this pet is the one for you:
Valerie is a sweet and affectionate young dog with a playful spirit and a bit of a shy side. Though she is shy she will warm up quickly with a gentle and patient approach. Valerie loves interacting with her human companions, soliciting pets with her adorable wiggle and even climbing onto laps for attention. She enjoys playing with other dogs, in the yard, where she shows her playful side by shaking stuffed toys and bouncing around. Valerie is great on walks, though she may start out a bit nervous, pulling and zigzagging before settling into a more relaxed pace, sniffing everything around her.

Valerie seems to be housebroken and has shown that she's very intelligent and eager to learn. She is very food-motivated, which helps during training sessions. Valerie has shown improvement in her confidence, especially when surrounded by a calm, reassuring presence. Though she is still gaining trust in new experiences and handling, she is quickly becoming more comfortable with her surroundings and people. Due to her initial fearful behavior, a calm and consistent home, ideally with older children or adults who understand her need for gentle guidance, would be ideal. Valerie would thrive in an environment that uses Fear Free or cooperative care methods, ensuring she continues to build positive associations with handling and touch. She is a wonderful companion for those willing to take things slow and build a bond based on patience and trust..

More about this shelter

San Diego Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, is creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Our lifesaving safety net has helped San Diego become the largest city in the U.S. to keep healthy and treatable shelter animals from being euthanized. We are a private, independent, nonprofit organization that is not affiliated with any other humane society or society for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

With campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona and San Diego, we provide animal services for 14 cities within San Diego County. We not only care for 50,000 animals in our communities but also share the expertise we have gained through our innovative programs with shelters nationwide so they can save more lives in their communities.

While our influence is expanding nationally, our top priority is meeting the needs of San Diego. We provide exceptional care for all animals through world-class veterinary medicine, shelter and most of all: love.
