My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Smile is approximately a 1-year-old, 12 lbs. Pretty chocolate chi-mix. We are guessing either weenie dog or min pin. He has more of a min pin look. He came to the rescue after a good Samaritan took him to an Emergency Vet after being hit by a car. I saw his post on one of the lost dog sites and advised him that I would reach out to follow up on him. Once his stray hold was up with the shelter, they contacted me, they let me know that his pelvis was crushed, his left back leg was fractured, and there was a spinal injury, he was painful and they felt his prognosis was poor, but because I reached out, they wanted to give me the opportunity to see if our rescue could help him. Our vets reviewed his X-rays and agreed it was a very severe injury, but also agreed that it was worth a try, so we went and picked him up! I immediately scheduled him with an orthopedic surgeon who stated his injuries were already healing because young dogs’ bones heal quickly. She put him on 8 weeks of strict kennel rest and we took the “wait to see” approach. Once he was allowed to run free and play, we were amazed at how well he was getting around. We followed up with the orthopedic and she was very surprised to not only see how friendly he was this time around (he is grouchy when he is painful), but she didn’t expect him to ever use his back leg, she thought it would need to be amputated. We took new x-rays and she was very pleased. His left leg doesn’t have the same range of motion and he does sit funny and will lift it to run but otherwise she advised that since he is using it, to leave it, you wouldn’t even know it had been fractured if you see him walking, he doesn’t even limp anymore. Her advice to an adopter is to continue his Dasuquin for bone and joint health, and make sure he gets lots of exercise to encourage range of motion. She did warn that as he ages it could change the prognosis of that leg, but right now he’s happy, comfortable, and healthy. Smile is still very much a puppy, he has lots of energy and runs the yard, he enjoys playing with dogs his size, he can be a little bossy, no young children, he likes chews and toys, he enjoys cuddling and sleeping in bed and he walks well on a leash. We have been on several outings, including a day at my work and he is super friendly to everyone. He was just neutered so hopefully his potty training will improve.

Adoption Policy and Fees

ADOPTION POLICY

Our Adoption Policy at AZCR requires all potential adopters to complete an application and interview with an Adoption Coordinator in order to be considered as a forever home for our dogs. AZCR will determine the best home for each dog based on the application process and interview. The application and/or interview does not guarantee an approval. It also does not guarantee the adoption of a particular dog you may be interested in. AZCR may recommend a different dog more suitable to your household. AZCR is a privately run, non-profit organization and reserves the right to refuse any adoption that is not in the best interest of the dog based on our policies and standards.

ADOPTION FEES

Why do you charge to adopt a rescue
dog?

When AZ Chihuahua Rescue (AZCR) takes in a dog, we incur some veterinary costs. Sometimes, the cost is minimal. However, there are several dogs we have taken in with significant medical needs. In some cases, we may take in more money on one dog which will help offset the higher medical expenses on another dog. (See our
"featured chihuahua" link to read about one of our medical needs dogs.) Reality is that in many cases, without additional donations from the public and our volunteers, we still would not be able to cover some of the medical expenses AZCR has incurred.

What is the fee to adopt a rescue dog
from AZCR?

Pups up to 11 months: $250

1 - 4 years old: $200

More about this rescue

AZ Chihuahua Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all volunteer organization. Our network consists of experienced rescue people who were previously doing rescue independently and realize the benefits of joining together and combining resources.

We believe there is a home for every dog we foster. Some just take a little longer to find. Most dogs spend at least a short time in foster care so we can evaluate their behaviors in a home setting. We can give potential adopters information on how the dog may interact with cats, children, men, women, other dogs, and so on. These are vital components to a good match. We also try to improve potty training skills if they are not already house trained. Our foster homes provide good nutrition and an understanding lap to prepare our dogs for life in a world where fear and starvation are non-existent.

Our Purpose

To rescue, rehabilitate and place chihuahuas into stable, loving homes

To educate the public about the responsibilities of chihuahua ownership in an attempt to alleviate the problem of unwanted pets

To build public awareness about the human-animal bond and its benefits to society
