My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

RUSTY (watch my video!)

  • Male, neutered
  • 3 years old
  • American Bulldog
  • 64 lbs.
  • Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention
  • Crate trained, house trained. Good with cats, dogs and kids

Rusty is a sweet, cuddly and playful boy who was saved from PG County Shelter's urgent list. He had entropion on both eyes when we brought him into Lovepaws which clearly made him very uncomfortable so we had corrective surgery done right away which provided almost instant relief. We are unsure how he came to be at the shelter but everyone who meets him asks “how could anyone give him up?” He’s got a lot of puppy energy, is a very happy boy and loves to snuggle and give affection. He is very social and wants to meet every person and dog in his sight. He wags his entire body when he meets someone or sees a human he loves! He sometimes thinks he is a lap dog and is very snuggly. He leans his head on his foster’s shoulder in a puppy hug. He’s got a deep bark but only uses it when he sees/hears something outside of the house or yard. He is very curious about his co-resident cat and shows all friendly signs but the cat is not interested! He’s played well with his foster sibling dog and is always friendly and playful. He loves toys, and has a lot of fun chasing a big rubber/plastic ball with a tennis ball inside of it. He also loves a kong filled with treats! His favorite day would be a good long walk and to play fetch for a while. He’d love to get some treats and snuggle on the floor or bean bag with his foster mom or human brother to watch some TV and snooze. He would also really love to play with other dogs!

Rusty is ready for a forever home where he can receive lots of play, love and affection!

More about this rescue

LOVEPAWS was founded as an animal intake prevention program to help keep pets in homes and out of shelters. To do this, we offer various types of assistance to pet owners including our pet food pantry and our re-homing service. We help find new homes for pets whose owners cannot keep them but do not want to surrender their pet to the shelter. While our focus is on Prince George’s County, MD, we offer these services to the entire DC Metro area.

Our scope and mission has grown quickly since we were founded in 2019 and we now pull dogs and cats from open-admission, high-intake shelters in MD, VA and other Southern states. This has expanded our rescue to be able to save dogs and cats of all breeds. Our expanded mission is to save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats and place them in loving and permanent homes. While we are a non-breed-specific rescue, we are a pittie-friendly rescue that has a soft spot for the pit bulls at the Prince George’s County animal shelter. They face the heartbreaking reality of the county’s pit bull ban which makes them unavailable for adoption to the public. We are committed to stepping forward whenever we can and wherever there is the greatest need.

LOVEPAWS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning MD, DC, and VA.
