My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ready to shine!

Hi, friends! My name’s Smudge, and I’m a two-year-old Shih Tzu mix. I have not yet been neutered, and I weigh a whopping 7.5 pounds.  I’m a sweet and loving little guy who’s been through a lot (having been relinquished by an LA rescue due to my fear of strangers), but I’m ready for my second chance at a happy life!

I’m a mix of playful and chill – I love lounging just as much as I enjoy a good game of fetch or a nice walk outside.  I’m also quite the talker! I might give you some sassy feedback if you correct me, but hey, it’s part of my charm. My biggest challenge is that I get nervous around men, but I’m working hard on overcoming my fears with slow and proper introductions.

As for training, I’m making great progress! I’m working on my crate training and can sleep through the night – though I’d prefer to snuggle in bed with you.  I’m also learning leash manners, but I’m not a fan of things going over my head, like harnesses.  I’ve started picking up basic commands, like “sit” and “stay,” and with the right guidance, I know I can master even more.

I think I’d be happiest with an elderly couple or someone who’s home most of the time to keep me company. After all, I have moderate symptoms of separation anxiety, so I’d prefer to not be left alone for longer periods of time. I’m fine with doggie siblings, especially confident bigger dogs who can show me the ropes.  Kids are great, too, but older ones (12 and up) might be a better fit since I sometimes get a little too excited and forget my manners.

With a little extra training and lots of love, I know I can become my best self and shine like the star I am!  My adoption fee is $300 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip.  If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
