My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Hi there! I’m Bennie, and I’m one fun, energetic guy looking for a family to call my own! I used to be called Musa, but my foster family decided to stick with the name Bennie, which I think fits me just fine.

I’m a *busy* boy—if I’m in the car, I’m a little all over the place because I just *love* car rides! I’m so excited, I want to be close to you, and I’d happily sit on your lap if you let me. But don't worry, I’m learning the ropes of crate training, and I think I’d be happiest with a little space where I can hang out and relax (but still be close to you, of course!).  Here’s a sweet video of me relaxing on the couch!

I’m also a *talker*! I love to bark to get your attention, but I promise I’m just excited. I’ve already learned the word “sit” and I’m working on more basic training. I’m super smart and really food motivated, so I pick things up quickly—especially if there’s a treat involved. I’m also getting the hang of walking with my gentle leader; at first, I pulled a little, but I’m learning fast and it makes a world of difference!

I’m great with cats who don’t run. I get a little curious and may want to sniff, but if they start running away, I admit I want to chase them. It’s not out of meanness, just pure excitement. I haven’t met too many dogs yet, but the resident dog, Nyah, and I hit it off. I really want to play with dogs my size, though, because I don’t always know how big I am, and I’m still working on understanding personal space (especially when I want to cuddle!).

I sleep in my foster mom’s 16-year-old’s room and I’m a big cuddler. I’m also a fan of squeaky toys—anything that keeps me busy and entertained! I need an active family who can give me plenty of exercise and adventure. I’d be thrilled to go on hikes, walks, or any other fun outings. I love to explore and see the world around me.

I’m a *big* fan of people and greet everyone with tons of enthusiasm, but I’m still learning not to jump up in my excitement. I might be a little much for tiny kiddos, just because I don’t always realize how big I am and could accidentally knock them over, but I’m great with my foster family’s 7-year-old. I adore hugs and kisses!

If you’re looking for a fun, loving, and playful companion who will always be by your side, I might just be the one for you! Let’s go on adventures together—I can’t wait to meet you!

Bennie was born on the beautiful White Earth reservation on 4/22/2024. Sadly, shortly after the puppies were born, their beloved owner passed away. The mother and her 12 puppies found temporary shelter at animal control up North. At just two weeks old, they were welcomed into a Ruff Start Rescue foster home. Bennie found his way back into rescue and is looking for his forever home! Bennie is now 9 month old and full of life! He would love a family that can exercise him a lot and work with him on training - Bennie wants to learn! Bennis is good with dogs, he's kennel trained and potty trained! One of his siblings had a DNA test done and it confirmed that the puppies are mostly Lab and Shepherd! He's a sweet boy!

Bennie is from a local reservation. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.

To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page.

*Rescue puppies are notorious for losing their birth certificates before entering our rescue. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.*

If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can   donate   to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning no animals are available at the Princeton, MN office for public viewing or adoption. All animals in our care reside in foster homes with few special exceptions for our adoption center animals, who are housed at our partnering facilities temporarily before adoption. To meet a Ruff Starter you may be interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application on our website.

More about this rescue

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit companion animal rescue that primarily serves communities throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as states in the south with severe pet overpopulation. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. Most of our work is accomplished by a complex network of volunteers, fosters, and supporters, all of whom come together to save thousands of animals each year.

Since our inception, we’ve firmly believed that a home is usually a far more desirable environment than a shelter or a kennel for most companion animals in need of a forever family. As a result, we rely nearly exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their adoptive homes. Please note: this means no animals are available at our facility for public viewing.

Each pet in our care is provided with routine vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, microchipped, given internal and external parasite preventatives, and tested for common bloodborne pathogens such as heartworm and feline leukemia. Advanced veterinary care is provided to any animal that requires such services before adoption.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, please fill out an applicable application at our website: www.ruffstartrescue.org.
