My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Buddy, a gentle, lovable 8-year-old Collie/Great Pyrenees mix with a heart as big as his fluffy coat! Buddy’s life on a working farm has shaped him into a loyal, well-mannered companion who’s learning to navigate his new life off the farm. Weighing around 80 pounds, he’s a large dog with a soft, tri-color sable coat that will require daily grooming to prevent matting and keep him looking his best.

Buddy is a peaceful soul who cherishes time with his people, whether it’s going for leisurely walks, exploring a fenced yard, or curling up on the couch. He has a calm energy most of the time but occasionally bursts into puppy-like playfulness, bouncing around with his favorite bouncy toy or pouncing at his plush toys. While he gets along with other dogs after a slow introduction, he prefers calm, respectful dogs who aren’t too pushy or high-energy. Buddy is also great with kids, though he appreciates gentle handling and a calm environment when he’s ready to relax.

Though Buddy is crate-trained, he’s never been confined in one before and may need time to adjust. He’s vocal and isn’t shy about expressing himself—especially when he wants to join you in a room he doesn’t have access to, or when he spots animals outside that spark his protective instincts. Due to his love for the outdoors and his protective nature, a fenced yard is essential, allowing him the freedom to move and explore in a safe space without being tied out.

Buddy’s medical needs include daily grooming, regular nail trims, and joint supplements to keep him comfortable and healthy. He tested positive for anaplasmosis (a tick-borne infection) and is on a course of antibiotics.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion who’s equal parts calm and playful, Buddy could be your perfect match!

The adoption fee is $250. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
