Goldfish is such a well-mannered, sweet-natured companion. This polite boy sits so serenely in his kennel, giving off a sense of quiet dignity, and keeps his space neat and tidy—he’s an absolute joy to have around. At 37 pounds, Goldfish is the perfect medium-sized companion—comfortable to have with you on walks or at home without being too much to handle. He’s already altered and ready to go home today, so if you’re looking for a new buddy, he’s all set for his next adventure.
Out on walks, Goldfish is a gentle and respectful walking buddy. While he does some intermittent pulling on the leash, it’s nothing too strenuous, and overall he walks nicely by your side. He knows `sit` and is very treat-motivated, making him easy to engage with during training or just to reinforce positive behavior. Plus, he takes treats with such gentleness, a small but delightful detail that shows just how sweet and well-mannered he truly is.
Goldfish is independent but also enjoys his playtime. He can amuse himself by rolling on the grass or playing with a squeaky ball, which shows he’s content to entertain himself when needed. He’s very happy to engage in a game of fetch if you throw a toy, but he’s not demanding of your attention. He’s the kind of dog that’s just happy to be in your presence, no pressure. One of Goldfish’s most endearing features is his adorable underbite, which gives him a thoughtful, almost philosophical expression, as though he’s constantly pondering the deeper meanings of life. It’s a charming look that will surely make you smile. Goldfish is already house trained and is a dream to leash up for a pleasant walk. His easy-going, well-behaved nature makes him a fantastic companion for just about anyone, and he’s sure to bring calm, loving energy to whatever home he joins.
Goldfish`s temporary foster reported that he is a sweet and cuddly companion who thrives on being close to people. With his thin coat, he’s highly sensitive to the cold and loves to stay near a heater or bundled up in a cozy sweater. His foster family also noted that he’s an expert cuddler, always following his humans from room to room for company and warmth. He handles being crated well, provided he has a warm and comfortable space. This affectionate boy was a good eater and took his medication well, although his excitement sometimes gets the best of him. Goldfish will be the perfect companion for someone who can provide him with the warmth, love, and care he deserves.

Step 2: Visit our shelter during adoption hours (Monday-Friday 2-6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). You may also pre-fill our Shelter Adoption Application ahead of time online to save time when you are at the shelter. Your application will be processed after you meet the animal.
Step 3: Tour our adoption rooms and write down the names of animals that you would like to meet. A volunteer or staff member will help you meet your chosen animals to make a match!
Step 4: When you have selected the right animal for you, our Adoptions Team will run your Adoption Application for approval. Once your application is approved, you will participate in an adoption class where you will learn all of the details about your new adopted family member, including their known history and medical records.
What else to expect: Animals who are already spayed/neutered and past their stray hold (if applicable) can often go home with you the same day. Pick-up arrangements for unaltered animals and/or animals still on a stray hold will be made during your adoption class.
**Please note: Animals listed on our adoption pages may still be on stray hold and pending reunion with their owners, or have an existing pending adoption application.

More about this shelter
BARCS is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization operating Maryland’s largest animal shelter and pet adoption center. We are an open admission shelter, granting refuge to every abandoned, neglected, abused, lost or surrendered animal that comes through our door. A staggering 30 or more animals are surrendered to BARCS every day. No matter what the circumstance, we do not turn away any animal in need of shelter, food, medical care and a loving touch. Yearly, this equates to more than 12,000 dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and even wildlife and exotic animals that need care and placement.
