Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Moriarty is a handsome grey and white domestic shorthair with a quiet, reserved nature that makes him a little shy at first. When you meet him, he may keep his distance, preferring the safety of a cozy nook where he can quietly observe. His thoughtful eyes hint at the deep well of affection he’s waiting to share, but he needs time and patience to feel truly at ease.
Once Moriarty realizes that all you want is to love him, his transformation is nothing short of magical. Slowly but surely, he comes out of his shell, revealing a sweet and affectionate side that will melt your heart. He’ll seek out gentle pets, purring softly as he learns to trust you, and before long, he’ll become a loyal and loving companion. Moriarty’s journey from shy to snuggly is a testament to the power of love, and for those who take the time to earn his trust, he’ll be the most rewarding friend you could ask for.
Meet and greet/adoption appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt!
DON'T FORGET! Cats often do better with a friend! All our cats and kittens have an "Adopt one and the 2nd at half the adoption fee!" bonus!!!
Our kitten/cat adoption fees vary on age, special needs, lonely heart status (cats that have been with us 6+ months), and for our senior to seniors program. Our adoption fees include the following: all of our cats/kittens are current on vaccinations (FVRCP series and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), treated for fleas/ticks/earmites in addition to being spayed or neutered once the cat reaches 2 lbs in weight. All cats and kittens adopted from the shelter are microchipped. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances.
Because we are on a busy street, we require that all cats leaving the shelter be in a carrier. All pets are up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee is paid.

More about this shelter
BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS' priority. Those unclaimed are transferred to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care.
In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.
BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.
