My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Houdini is a 9-year-old, 13-pound male chihuahua mix from Texas! Houdini is a sweet, social, and calm gentleman.

He is continuing to adjust since arriving from Texas and is getting used to the sounds, smells, and cold weather in New York City! Houdini enjoys cuddling and spending time relaxing with his foster parents and brothers (3-pound chihuahua and pit mix). He is the perfect companion for movie marathons or days/nights reading on the couch.

Houdini is very well behaved and minds his manners. During his time with his foster family, he has not had any accidents in the house and appears to be house-trained. We have made pee-pads available to him, but he has not attempted to use them yet.

Houdini is getting used to wearing a harness and leash. He is working on his leash skills but at the moment, he uses a fenced in area to use the bathroom without a leash. He responds to being called and prefers to stay close by while exploring outside. Houdini enjoys the company of other dogs and while outside, he prefers to observe and is working up the courage for greetings with less familiar dogs. Houdini is not reactive and is happy to sit on your lap to watch other animals and people or chill at a coffee shop. While inside with his foster brothers, he is happy to snuggle and spend time socializing and observing them. His forever family will need to continue working with Houdini to reinforce his leash skills and confidence and advance the progress he has been making.

Houdini loves his crate and is happy to spend time there. He also loves to spend time on fuzzy blankets and his heating pad on the couch with his chihuahua brother. He does not appear to have any separation anxiety but is home with 2 other dogs throughout the day.

Houdini is looking for a low-key family. He appreciates down time but does enjoy spending time outside and exploring different smells and areas. We believe Houdini would do well as an only child or with a small, calm dog sibling. We have not tested him with cats but based on his personality, we believe he would do well with them.

We would recommend Houdini go to a family with no children but could imagine him doing well with older children/teens who would honor his space and let him warm up to them in his own time. Anyone would be lucky to add this gentle sweetheart to their family!

Vaccinated for rabies, DHPP, lepto, and bordetella. Neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Recent dental cleaning. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

To apply for Houdini, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the dog is on our website, they are still available.

Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

STEP 1: Apply!
Download and complete an ADOPTION APPLICATION from www.waggytailrescue.org/adopt-a-waggytail

STEP 2: The Meet and Greet!
We strongly suggest the ALL members of the household come to the meet and greet. This is the time to determine whether a dog's personality is match for you, your family and your other animals, and if you have allergies. If everything goes well you may adopt the same day, or take a day or two to decide, but we cannot indefinitely hold dogs in foster care for you.

STEP 3: Contract and Donation!
Fill out and sign the TRANSFER AGREEMENT.

The DONATION FEE may be paid by Venmo (@WaggytailRescue) or Paypal (waggytailrescue@gmail.com, add $15 processing fee). Please put the name of the dog in the memo section! Electronic payment is preferred!
You may also pay by check (payable to Waggytail Rescue), however processing of adoptions may be delayed by up to 2 weeks.
If your new buddy is not yet neutered, a $100 refundable deposit must be paid at adoption.

Dog Donation Fees
(includes microchip registration, age appropriate vaccines, and neuter)

$550 for puppies under 1 year
$450 for dogs 1 to 8 years
$325 for seniors over 9 years of age

Please add an additional $15 when paying by PayPal to cover processing fees.
Add $100 neuter deposit for unfixed animals.
