My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Hi … my name is Murphy! Please take a minute to read my entire bio to find out everything you need to know about me.

If you think I might be the perfect pup for you, go to www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/forms and complete the adoption application online.

Murphy is a cute shih-tzu/terrier mix boy who is full of energy and love!  When Murphy and a few of his friends came to AAMR, he was curious and wide open from the beginning!  He is sweet and energetic and grew up around a lot of dogs close to his size.  He is not a fan of larger dogs. He loves treats and tries really hard to listen, but with all that energy, sometimes it’s hard!  Murphy, like most pups, would benefit from going to obedience classes, so he would meet new friends and learn how to behave properly.  It seems like most of what he knows, he has learned from other dogs.  Although the pups had human contact, they do not seem to have had a lot of human ‘interaction’ such as learning their names, listening skills, or basic manners. Now he just needs some human instruction so he can learn how to be the best boy! Anyone who knows shih-tzus and little terriers knows they are super smart, a little wild and willful, and make the most loving little fur-buddies.

A fenced yard is high on Murphy’s wish list at a new home!  He loves to run around and explore, especially if he has another small pup to run with.  He learns his routine quickly but still does not have good enough recall to be allowed off-leash outside.  He had never seen a leash or harness prior to coming to foster care, so this has been a learning experience and we’re still working on it.  That sweet little face tells you all you need to know … he just needs a great, patient family to love him forever!

Approximate age/birthdate:  ~June 10, 2023

Weight/size:  ~18 lbs

Housebroken:  Working on it and doing well.

Crate trained:  YES

Personality: happy, curious, on the move, a bit high strung and vocal (probably not the best fit for apartment/condo living)

Energy level:  medium with bursts of high … he does need plenty of daily exercise

Fenced yard required?:   Definitely preferred … it will make life easier for everyone if he has a safe, fenced area to run off some energy!  He must never be outside a fenced area off-leash.

Does he/she jump fences?  NO

Leash walk with manners:  Working on it … a leash was something he had never seen before coming to AAMR

Obedience training:  None

Riding in vehicles:  He is learning but still gets stressed and may drool a little

Spayed/neutered:   YES

Up-to-date on routine vaccinations:   YES

Microchipped:   YES

Social with other dogs:  YES – dogs closer to his size.  He is not comfortable with larger dogs but so far has just tried to avoid them.

Social with cats:  Has not been around cats in foster care, but we’re all betting he would like to playfully chase them

Good with children:  Will probably be best with respectful, calm children ages 10 and up.  His energy level might be overwhelming for younger children.

Adoption donation:  $200

All-American Mutt Rescue is an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits.  You can expedite the process by answering all the questions on the application completely.  We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible.

When your application is approved, we will schedule a home visit/meet-and-greet to see if Murphy picks you too.

If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed. Please feel free to email weluvpups@hotmail.com if you have additional questions.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption process:
Step 1: Complete the appropriate Adoption Application. There are different applications for dogs and cats. You will find the form online http://www.allamericanmuttrescue.org/forms/ Then click on 'Fill Out' and you will be taken directly to the form. Once submitted, it comes directly to us. You should get a message immediately if your application has been successfully submitted
Step 2: Members of the Adoption Committee thoroughly review completed applications and do reference checks. Please remember that adopting a pet is making a commitment of 10-15 years, so we do not take any shortcuts in processing applications. It is our responsibility to place these pets in the very best homes we can possibly find for them. Application processing can usually be done in 7-14 days. Sometimes it may take longer if we have a problem reaching your references or finding another rescue to do a home visit for out-of-town or out-of-state adoptions.
Step 3: After reference checks are completed and your Adoption Application is tentatively approved, we will schedule a home visit and a time for you to meet the pet that just might be the newest member of your family. We will ask that all family members be present for the meet-and-greet ... including all other family pets.

Please be aware that we generally limit adoptions to families within 75 miles of our location in Huddleston, VA. There may be exceptions made, but application processing for remote adoptions usually takes longer because we must find another rescue to help us by conducting a home visit. This is required.

**Please remember that we are an all-volunteer, home-based rescue organization. We do not have a public shelter facility, so all home visits/meet-and-greets for potential adopters and fosters are done after applications are approved and by appointment only. Most of our volunteers work full-time jobs, so the majority of our home visits are scheduled for Saturdays between 10 am and 2 pm and Sundays between 1 pm and 3 pm. You can also meet adoptables at our public events noted on our website. Of course, we will always try to be as flexible as possible when scheduling meet-and-greets.
Step 4: After the home visit, if everything seems to be a perfect match, the final step is the signing of the Adoption Contract, payment of the adoption donation, and welcoming your new family member home.

Please note that completing the online application does not obligate you to adopt a pet, nor does it guarantee that your application will be approved. AAMR reserves the right to decline any application without providing a reason. Please understand, also, that often there are multiple applications for one pet and it is the responsibility of the Committee to find the best fit for each pet.

Go meet their pets

We are an all volunteer, home-based rescue organization. We do not have a public shelter facility, so you can meet our pups at our public events, such as at the Lynchburg VA Petco. Please check our Calendar of Events regularly for other opportunities to meet our pups. Otherwise, we have volunteers bring pups for a home visit after an application has been approved.

More about this rescue

Our motto is "Rescue … rehome … real love” and we try to live it every day. We rescue animals in need of new homes and loving families. We make sure each of them is spayed or neutered and up-to-date on all routine vaccinations. If other medical care or treatment is needed, we get that for them as well.

We welcome these fosters into our homes and our lives and really get to know their personalities and their needs. Then we make it our mission to re-home them - to place them in the forever home that will be perfect for them. Some of them really need to have another dog companion, while others will do well being an 'only pet.' Some love having children to play with, while others prefer being with adult companions. Some do well sharing a home with cats or other small pets, while others .... well ... no so much. And the only way we know this is by living with them!

We also work to educate and encourage other pet owners to spay or neuter their animals to

a) help their pets lead longer, healthier lives, and
b) help reduce the numbers of homeless and unwanted animals in our Central Virgina communities.

It is such an easy thing to do! Not only will it benefit your pet and your family, but it will reduce the numbers of wonderful, adoptable animals that are euthanized every year. Please be part of the solution.
