Meet the Marvelous Miss Mellie! She is a beautiful, loving girl who would like nothing more than to snuggle up next to you and have you scratch her ears and belly.
Since we have brought her home, Mellie has quickly grown in confidence and being comfortable around our family (two adults, two teens), including our other dog, a four year old male lab retriever. (In fact, she got over any nervousness long before he did!) She is so warm-hearted and affectionate we think she would do well with younger kids too.
Mellie loves to run outside in the yard, roll around in the grass, and then find a sunny spot to sit and lounge. And when she is ready to come back in, she sits quietly by the door until she is let inside.
Mellie is house-trained, and quickly found a favorite spot in the yard to do her business. She is fine going on car rides, though still needs to be picked up and put inside the car. (But Mellie is fine with being picked up, so this has not been an issue.) She is getting used to the idea of a harness and leash.
She has quickly picked out a couple spots around our house as her favorite places to lay down, and when she comes inside, she quickly runs to one of those spots and lays down nicely. When inside, her favorite thing is sitting next to someone as they watch TV, sitting contently by their side. And even from the first night we brought her home, Mellie has slept soundly and quietly in her own pen, and greets us with a waggy tail each morning, ready to begin a new day.
Mellie is a total love bug who would bring happiness to anyone who would like to bring her into their home. Click “Adopt Me” to connect with her foster!

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day! For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites. For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.
Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older
