Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
This intelligent, playful and affectionate young dog is looking for his happily-ever-after.
Werthers is a dog who is most comfortable in a calm and relaxed environment. Too much activity makes him anxious, and therefore his ideal home would be one that is kid-free and on the quieter, more laid back side. He is a very typical `tween` Golden. He needs lots of opportunities to burn off his energy through exercise and play, in addition to regular walks and activities that allow him to use his brain. We are looking for a home with a fully fenced yard (no invisible fencing, please) where he can make the most of the space to run and play. He loves his toys and will often carry one in his mouth around the house, but true to his breed, a good game of fetch is his favourite pastime. He is doing well with his leash training and though he can pull at times, he is easily corrected. His forever humans will need to practice patience and consistency as he continues to master his leash skills. He has shown some level of prey drive, so out of an abundance of caution, we would not recommend Werthers for a home with cats or critters.
Werthers is very food motivated, which lends itself to his trainability. He knows basic commands such as `sit`, `lie down`, `wait`, `OK`, `give a paw` and is working on `drop`, particularly with high value treats. Werthers has also shown us that he is protective of his food bowl, and it will be very important that mealtime be safely managed to prevent triggering this resource guarding. Ideally we would like to find adopters who are experienced with dogs who display this type of behaviour, so they can work with him to overcome this and to ensure it doesn`t become a bigger issue.
Werthers prefers slow introductions when meeting new people. He may bark initially, but once he is able to approach and feels safe, he will quickly warm up. He is fully housetrained and does use a crate, which keeps him out of mischief when left alone. A bed time he also likes to sleep in his crate without issue or fuss. His Fosters have also found it a useful tool when he may become overstimulated. and in need of a brief time out to help him to calm down.
Werthers is very devoted to his people and loves attention and affection. He needs a family who will find lots of time to spend playing with him, offering belly rubs and affection, and who will dedicate themselves to helping him become the very best dog he can be!
