Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Miss Palmer is a petite little 2-3 yr old Bluetick mix weighing a mere 40 lbs.  She is kennel trained and doesn't potty in the house, but is still working on keeping her kennel dry overnight. She will need a fenced in yard, as her hound dog nose carries her in every direction.  As with most hounds, she is a counter surfer, but what a maid service she can perform in your kitchen for you! :)  Palmer is a very mellow hound who seldom barks or bays, but will occasionally "WOOWOOO!" when she wants something. She can be a little timid meeting new people but quickly warms up.  So far, she hasn't met a dog that she doesn't like. We can't say for certain how she is with cats.  Palmer is a low/medium energy dog, and is just as happy to nap all day as she is to explore. Her hobbies include napping, sniffing and sniffing some more. If you would like to meet Palmer, please submit an adoption application through our website, Adopthope.org   Palmer's adoption fee is $250 and includes her spay, microchip, current vaccines and heartworm testing plus a free basic training course at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha.  Palmer is seeking an indoor only home, we do require that applicants have a history of having kept any former/current pets; altered current on vaccines and preventatives and as indoor pets only.  Our adoption process includes a vet history check and a home visit.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 18, 2025, 7:01 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Witten originally came to Safe Haven in 2021 as a 3 month old puppy because his senior owner was not able to deal with his puppy antics.  This owner said he purchased Witten in Missouri and was told that he is a Bluetick Coonhound X Heeler mix.  Witten was lucky enough to be adopted and seemed to find a perfect home - one where there were no cats, and he had plenty of room to run and play in the backyard and explore the countryside. Sadly Witten eventually was returned to Safe Haven because his family had a baby that was hitting the toddler years and couldn't be trusted to respect the boundaries that Witten needed.  This became a concern because Witten didn't like to be bothered when sleeping, and he had also been grumpy about having his feet touched (especially cleaned when muddy) and dislikes having his nails trimmed. While back at Safe Haven we have always been mindful of how we handle Witten safely, especially when he is sleeping - and we haven't had any issues.  Witten is just an all around GREAT dog - he has had multiple dog playmates at the shelter, whom he enjoys spending time with, both on walks and in the play yard. So, with proper introductions, we do believe he would do alright in a home with another dog as long as he has his own space to relax in, and eat in his own space, etc.   We just know that the only restrictions he needs is a home without cats because he does have a pretty strong prey drive, and is a bit too interested in all the kitties at Safe Haven! While we are always sad when an adopted dog is returned to the shelter, we know we learn more about Witten every step along the way of his adoption story here at Safe Haven.  We are committed to find him his truly forever home that will devote their home and heart to Witten and give him what he deserves forever - because our volunteers just think he is a TRUE CATCH and will be a great dog for some lucky adopter!Click here to watch a video of Witten.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 21, 2025, 3:39 am

Story
Elvis honestly has a fan club going on here at the shelter, he is simply the most phenomenal, well-behaved, sweet, and absolutely endearing of dogs we've ever had. & of all breeds, a hound-dog! He has caught us ALL by surprise with his love for human attention, romping with other dogs of all sizes, and all the snuggles he can get! Elvis knows all the basic tricks in the book, including shake, and he LOVES doing them for his treats! He is just a DOLL, without even mentioning he is crate-trained, and based on his behavior, and how he keeps his kennel perfectly clean - we figure he's house-broken. At about 4 years old, and just under 70 pounds; he's a big old boy! But he's SO gentle, and rarely ever, if ever, jumps up on people, and has amazing manners. Gosh, how obvious is it that he's perfect for you?! We know he will thrive in most loving homes, he's the sweetest ever!
