Story
Meet Lilly, the border collie mix! This shy sweetheart came into the Shelter very unsure about new people and the world around her. A foster family took her in and she has really blossomed. They report: “Our girl is a sweetheart! She is cautious with of new people but warms up once she’s gotten to know them. She LOVES Bernard (the resident Great Pyrenees) and is respectful. Lilly has a favorite toy: the corduroy snowman! She absolutely loves it. She is great at using pee pads and not quite ready for prime time going outside in the yard.” Although Lilly has made great progress in her foster home, she is still more of the wallflower type and is looking for a dog savvy adopter. She gains a lot of confidence from being around other dogs so it is required she go to a home with other dogs who are looking for a youngin’ to be their shadow and join in on all of life’s adventures! From March 10th to March 17th, this dog’s adoption fee is reduced to $50 during the Get Lucky Adoption Special. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Hey there, I'm Onyx! I'm a young, energetic and playful fella with a knack for making people laugh. You see, I ended up here at the shelter because I mistook the mailman's bag for a giant chew toy. Oops! But don't worry, I've learned my lesson and I've been practicing my manners. I can sit, lie down, and I walk like a gentleman on a leash. I can even shake hands...or paws! I'm a smart cookie, always ready for a new challenge. I might be a goofball, but I promise I'll be your most loyal friend. If you're looking for a pup who's equal parts Einstein and Chaplin, I'm your guy! Adopt me, and I promise to fill your life with laughter, loyalty, and a whole lot of love! I graduated from The SPCA's highly regarded Ruff Start Program which pairs shelter dogs in need of extra care or attention with inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison for training and love. I am eligible for Foster to Adopt! Please speak to a SPCA staff member for more information. Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: White Weight: 54 Age: 0yrs 11mths 2wks

Story
Introducing Zaida! This sweet girl came to AFRP after she was found along the side of a road where a good samaritan stopped to help her. Now, she's thriving in foster care and ready to find her forever home! Zaida is your typical active girl, very treat-motivated and loving as can be! Her favorite things are giving kisses, playing ball and going for walks. Zaida loves being around and playing with other dogs and loves being the center of attention! She thoroughly enjoys belly rubs and tennis balls... ESPECIALLY enjoys tennis balls. She's not an apartment pup and will require a fenced-in yard to ensure she's able to have some space to get all of that energy out! Her daily routine is playing with her foster sisters, running around the backyard and loves small and large breeds alike. She is learning more every day and is continuing working on training and socialization with other dogs. Zaida would do just fine in a home with adult adopters or with families with dog-savvy children over the age of six but can get excited at times and we don't want her knocking over littles! While in our care, Zaida has been diagnosed with idiopathic head tremor syndrome (IHTS), a benign condition characterized by focal head tremors of unknown cause. While this condition is not fully understood, Zaida's continuous head and body tremors are managed as part of her unique journey. Tremors do resolve over time, but some, such as Zaida, have continuous head and body tremors. Alongside this, Zaida is currently taking long-term medication to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, as well as OCD. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been received and approved. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org for our required online dog application.

Looks like: Border Collie mix Female, 3 years old (estimated), 44 pounds Sweet Fern is a little nervous when making new friends, but given just a tiny bit of attention, she becomes fast friends with everyone she meets. Fern is a very active and playful girl, and loves to go for long hikes with her foster mom. We're quite obsessed with the whole body lean she does once comfortable! She's quite the charmer. Fern was found as a stray in a rural area of Monterey County, and sadly no one came looking for her. We can't wait for this beautiful girl to bond with her people and blossom in time!

Story
!n Santa Cruz - Meet Ranger, a 8 year old Border Collie male. Ranger is is typical border collie who is playful and super smart. Ranger came to us after his owner passed away. He was loved but didn't get out too much. He was 1 of 4+ plus dogs and we think the dogs were left to their own devices. With this being said, Ranger can be nervous in public and is more of a homebody. Ranger can be good with other dogs when he gains trust with them but we think he be best suited for a home as the only pet (no cats). Ranger's ideal home would be: -a home where he can be a priority -a home experienced with border collies or other herding breeds -owners that are understanding of his sensitives in pubic -would be best suited as the only pet Ranger is a fun loving border collie but he also has an off switch! He is perfectly happy relaxing on the couch hanging out with his owners. Ranger will make his people very happy but they also need to be understanding of his background and manage his environment. Ranger is; fully house trained, has good house manners, no nuisance barking and is easy to live with. He also has some basic training under the right circumstances. Ranger is is neutered, up-to-date and microchipped. If you would like to learn more about this sweet guy, please submit an application. https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family.

Attention Border Collie Lovers!! Meet Pace. A 4 year old border collie male. Pace is your typical border collie who is active and super smart. Pace loves his people and is good with other dogs under the right circumstances. Pace came to us from an environment where he was left to his own devices but was loved on. Sadly, his owner passed away and he ended up in rescue. Pace is learning a lot and has bonded deeply with his foster. He also coexists well with the other dogs in the household. Pace loves car rides, walks and hiking! He does well in public but can get nervous and be skittish, but does warm up in time. Pace would be best suited for a home who has had border collies before as he has some BC- like traits including the following; a busy mind, can herd other dogs and need redirection, noise triggers and someone willing to manage and further navigate his integration into society. Pace is very sweet and has a "soft" personality. He really wants to do good and please his owner. Pace's Ideal Home -Someone who is home often -an active home -experienced with herding dogs -a committed home to work with furthering his training - a home with a yard -another dog might be a bonus on the other dogs temperament Pace is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and is microchipped. If you would like to learn more about this sweet boy, please submit an application! https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family.

Story
Meet Ziga, the neutered male Australian Shepherd. Ziga came to the Shelter as a stray so we do not know much about his life before the Shelter. Staff describe him as a handsome yet mischievous neutered male. He loves to be outdoors and happily engage with people. He has met a variety of dogs at the Shelter and has quickly initiated play. He will sometimes engage in herding breed behaviors (not a total shocker since he is well, a herding breed) so breed savvy adopters are recommended. Bonded with his guardian through force free/R+ paired with appropriate mental and physical stimulation will help set Ziga up for success. Patience as Ziga learns life skills and manners (house training, leash walking, etc) will be needed by his new guardians. If you are looking for an active pup to join you on life’s adventures – come meet Ziga today! Now through February 15th, we are hosting “Adopt Your Valentine” where adoption fees are reduced to $50. The adoption fee includes all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchips. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Story
Meet Fern, the aussie! Fern came to the Shelter as a stray with her “friend” Frisbee (a male terrier mix). Staff have observed that she is quiet in the kennel but is perking up with daily interactions with staff and other dogs. Fern is still perfecting life skills and manners such as leash walking and house training. Adopters should be patient in the transition and use force free / +R training to bond with her and help her learn. Staff have commented how sweet Fern is and noted that she enjoys playing fetch with a tennis ball. We do not have any history of Fern with children or cats.
