Story
Transparency is key in dog rescue, and we believe it’s essential to share everything we know about our foster dogs so that potential adopters are fully prepared to meet their needs. Today, we want to introduce you to Francine, a 5-year-old Bouvier des Flandres who was recently released from a "breeder." Francine’s story is a tough one, and we want to be completely honest about the challenges she faces and the kind of home she needs. Francine is a gentle soul who is great with other dogs and feels more at ease when she has a doggy friend to follow. However, we need to be upfront—Francine is practically feral. She has clearly never known the love and comfort of being a pet. After several months in foster care, she’s still extremely fearful. She might take a treat after running from you, and she occasionally allows some petting, though it’s hard to tell if she actually enjoys it. She also seems to like men more than women. She is not a snuggly, affectionate couch dog, and she may never be. Francine is really no bother at all. She just exists quietly in the background, never demanding attention, although she does really love a good dinner and will get very excited at mealtime. She is crate trained and housebroken, though sometimes she needs a little reminder to leave the safety of the front porch and venture into the yard to do her business. Walking on a leash is a challenge—she thrashes around until she gets going, and then she’ll walk relatively well with you. Because of her extreme fears, Francine will require a very secure fenced-in yard, and quite frankly, a lot of love and patience. While we can’t say for certain that Francine came from a puppy mill, it’s clear that she didn’t receive the socialization she deserved as a dog. She now suffers immensely as a result. For her to feel secure, she will need a dog friend who can provide comfort and teach her that people aren’t all bad. Francine is not the dog for everyone, but she’s the perfect dog for someone with a kind heart, endless patience, and a deep love for animals who have been through unimaginable hardships. She needs someone who is willing to give her the time, space, and understanding she needs to learn what it means to be loved. If you have room in your heart and home for a dog like Francine, who really needs a second chance at the life she deserves, please consider adopting her. Together, we can help Francine find the love and security she’s been missing for so long. Francine is being fostered in the Whitewater, WI area.
