Story
Meet Callie! This little cutie is a year old now and has been in our care most of her life. She was born with excess fluid or “water on the brain” that caused blindness and was given to a family who was not equipped to care for her. They grew frustrated with her and didn't understand her behaviors or take her to the vet for further diagnosis. Callie was more subdued than most puppies and showed some neurological signs, like circling, and had significantly limited vision, consistent with a condition called hydrocephalus. We took her to a neurologist and she was started on a medication that helps control symptoms of the condition and it has worked incredibly well. We can’t change the fact that she’s blind, but otherwise, she is symptom-free. Dogs with mild or moderate cases like Callie can live a healthy, happy full life. She’s had no seizures on the meds, no longer walks in circles, and lives a very normal life. Callie has matured to be a self-sufficient, confident, loving pup, and while she can’t see, that’s all she’s ever known so she rolls with it.  Callie has adapted quickly to home life. She’s a very smart, sweet dog who makes a wonderful companion She’s being fostered by Leah and Chris and has been living with their pack of 3 pups, both large and small. Callie has been good with every pup we’ve introduced her to and finds comfort in her dog business.  We checked in with her foster mom, Leah, for a quick update.  “Callie is very confident once she gets her bearings straight. She learned the layout of our home pretty quickly. She will explore to learn where everything is - especially the kitchen! The only times I've seen her be hesitant is when she is outdoors in a new spot for the first time - all of the smells and noises can be a little intimidating. As with most blind dogs, her other senses are very strong.  She can smell peanut butter in another room! She integrated into our home very quickly. She found the toys - she likes tuggy ones, Nylabones, and the stuffed toys that make the crinkle sounds - but her absolute favorite toys were my slippers. They had little pouf balls on them and she enjoyed ripping the balls off (which was totally okay they were cheapies off Amazon). She may have a foot fetish... hehe. She tries to play with my dogs but mine are Mean Golden Girls so not much luck there..She’s a very playful, fun dog and would have loved a canine playmate in her new home.  She’s also very snuggly and likes to cuddle on the couch with you and gives lots of kisses. We taught her to "walk" on a leash outside the home, but she needs treats to make her move along. She loves to explore the backyard which is familiar terrain. She’s really good about peeing outside and now she’s pooping outside too. She learned to go up steps quickly and we have trained to use our 4 front steps into the house and then the doggie steps to the couch. I think she can see some shadows. Honestly, you sometimes forget she's blind because she doesn't act all that impaired. She is a really happy-go-lucky dog with lots of energy and love to give. We need someone special to take this sweet little nugget. She's one smart cookie" Apply today to learn more! Story
Meet Krispy, aka Christie. This sweet pup was found wandering on the side of the road in Chester, SC pregnant and foraging for food. Thankfully, a kind person took her in and posted on social media for help. Worthy Dog found her a foster home the next day and Christie gave birth just days later to three healthy puppies (Snap, Crackle, and Pop) in the warmth and comfort of a foster home. Christie was a great mom to her pups and they have all been adopted. &#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143&#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143&#226&#157&#164&#239&#184&#143 Christie is only 5 to 6 years old but came from a very neglectful life. She had no prior vet care, likely lived outside, and had dental issues that were causing her pain. The good news is she's completed her heartworm treatment, spay surgery, and had an extensive dental. She’s been living a happy, secure, pain-free life in her foster home for the past few months and is flourishing. Her foster mom, Renee, and her dog buddy, Ryder, are taking good care of her. Christie and Ryder got along well from the first meeting and had an easy integration. Christie is still figuring out how to play and will go up to Ryder and prance around, but is a little intimidated by his larger size. They run together in the yard and enjoy pack walks and she looks to him for guidance. Christie has great doggie social skills and has done well meeting other family dogs. She loves being part of a pack and is more of a follower than a leader. Christie's overall energy is laidback. She gets excited when it’s time to eat, when she sees you first thing in the morning, and when you come home. Other than that she’s pretty mellow and loves to snuggle. We feel another established and calm dog in the home would be the best fit for her. She followed Ryder’s lead from day one and they’ve become good friends. They snuggle together on the couch and in bed at night and she finds comfort in his companionship. Christie is crate-trained and housetrained and will go to the door when she needs to go out. She has been doing short leash walks and seems to enjoy getting out and about. She rides well in the car now and recently did a 4-hour road trip with Renee and slept most of the way. She also has pretty good social skills and has done well meeting friends and family who visit. It takes her a few minutes to trust, but then she’s fine. She loves Renee’s grandkids and will snuggle with them when they visit. We feel the best home for Christie has a patient owner, a calm environment, and an established dog buddy for companionship. She is skittish around loud noises, so she’s probably not a city dog. She has such a sweet, gentle personality and will make an excellent companion for some lucky owner.  Apply today!   BREED ESTIMATE: Chihuahua Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  13 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~  5 to 6 year old COAT TYPE: Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $400 HEALTH INFO: utd on shots/spayed/microchipped/dental and treated for heartworm,  LOCATION:  Vienna, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Bobo! Sadly, Bobo’s owner has dementia and was no longer able to care for him. The family surrendered him to a code red shelter that was out of space, and thankfully an advocate reached out to our rescue for help. Fortunately, we were able to find a foster home for him quickly. He's been living in an active home that includes a foster mom and dad, two small dogs, and two teens he adores. Bobo had a very smooth integration into the pack; he follows their lead and always wants to play. He enjoys the activity of the home and will make a great family dog. After a few weeks in his foster home, we have learned that Bobo is a very spunky, affectionate, and unique little guy. He’s charming and everyone who meets him loves him. He does grumble at new people initially but then warms up quickly. He bounces around his foster home from room to room to see where everyone is, but definitely loves his foster mom, Lacey, and likes to stay close. He loves to cuddle and wants your attention. His favorite place to sleep is on the couch buried under a blanket or under the sheets in the bed with his person. Bobo has been in his foster home for about a month now learning the rules of home life. He knows to go potty outside and just needs a consistent schedule. He is not a fan of the crate but has gone in on his own to nap if the door is left open. His foster mom used a baby gate with him initially, but he has now earned free roam privileges in the home. He loves to go on walks and has good leash skills — he’ll make a great walking buddy. Lacey describes Bobo as a nice mix of active and moderate energy. He has a pep in his step when he walks around that is so cute. Once he is comfortable, he will curl up on the couch and sleep. He loves toys but you have to watch him because he will chew on them and try to eat the pieces. Bobo is a social little guy who would do well in an active home. He really enjoys the teens (13 and 15) in his foster home. He follows them around and cuddles with them. They have taught him how to sit for a treat, and when they have had friends over, he seems to like them as well. He does like to jump up and is NOT a fan of being picked up, so older children or children who are experienced with dogs would be best. We think that Bobo may be hearing impaired, but the vet was not able to confirm it. He does not respond to most noises, and to wake him up, you have to gently rub his head or back. When his foster parents come home, the two family dogs will bark and run to greet them, but Bobo just snoozes away.  Other than those instances, you would never know he has limitations. He is food-motivated, learns quickly, and acclimates well to change. If you are looking to add a fun-loving, sweet, cuddly pup to your pack, Bobo is your guy. He'll bring joy, laughs, and lots of snuggles  Apply today!
