Story
Are you looking for a good boy? How about a goofy, loving, and smart boy? I'm here to tell you that you have made it to the right place, as I am ALL those things! I'm Darko, a 2 year old Dalmatian/border Collie mix. I'm a good boi. I seem to get along well with other dogs but the shelter always recoomends a proper introduction. I'm active as my breeds are known for but I've also got a mellow side. I know when it's time to unwind and relax and I'm all for curling up on the couch and snuggling. My only flaw- I don't like kitty cats. So, what do you say? Have I convinced you that I'm amazing yet?? If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to request an appointment to meet me. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and Minneapolis, MN areas twice a month. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual and we will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veteinarian ($35). Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! ##2095206##

Story
THIS BOY NEEDS HIS OWN HOME! BAILEY HAS BEEN IN A DRC FOSTER HOME SINCE 2019. Sweet, lovable Bailey is an active 7-8 year old neutered mixed breed dog, ready to give you lots of love and devotion. He likes to go for walks and gentle runs and would love to go on hikes. Bailey doesn't take long to warm up to new people. But Bailey is also a cuddler, and a kisser. He is a true velcro dog, always wanting to be by your side. Bailey is not fond of cats. He is a caretaker and watches over his family and house from a deck or patio during the day and captures your bed at night. Bailey would like a home with another laid-back companion for company and and play-time, and a good fence for security. For more information, contact friends@dalmatianrescueco.org. Bailey is currently in Falcon (Colorado Springs). Suggested adoption donation: $250. Please submit an application for adoption for Bailey at www.dalmatianrescueco.org.  If interested in this dog, please go to www.dalmatianrescueco.org and submit an application for adoption. Under Adoptions, please read our adoption policy.  We must have an application before we can begin the adoption process and each dog does have foster contact listed. August 9, 2024, 8:40 am

Story
Hello Everybody! My name is Mika (mee-kuh). I’m a Dalmatian mix, and a little bit bigger girl (because I am tall), but I only weigh about 55-57 pounds. I could stand to lose another couple of pounds, but the food is good here and we have yummy treats! I’m not telling, but I am probably mixed with either a larger hound or something like a Great Pyrenees because I have dewclaws on my back feet and a tiny bit of an undercoat. I am getting along well with my foster sisters and with a boy dog that was fostering with me for a while. I am kind of bold, and a bit rowdy, when meeting new dogs, so slow introductions will be required. Once I learn to trust you, I will play with you all day. I do like to set the rules among the four-leggeds, so I have some opinions about sharing the water bowl, guarding my space, and occasionally wanting to keep my bone or my person to myself. I won’t get too upset though if you just understand my rules. My foster Mom is working on this with me. I do great hanging around the food bin while Mom gets our dinner, and I am very considerate when the treats are being doled out, but my new parents need to continue working on this resource guarding thing with me. I have not been around cats or kids, but I do very well leaving the resident house bunnies alone (well, except to eat the bunny berries. Those guys are like regular treat dispensers, it’s kinda cool!). I love to be with my person, and I follow her everywhere. Sometimes I climb in her lap or jump on her, but I am working on that. I am also a very good girl and can stay in my own room even when Mom leaves the house, but I do well lounging in my crate when I have to. I have very good potty habits although I did do a little submissive peeing when I first got here because I was scared about being in a new place. I haven’t done that in a long time though. I would love a home where I am either an only dog or have one or two more submissive buddies. I do love to play, so a play buddy would be nice. I don’t think I would like the dog park. Please contact my foster mom Tara @ spotteddogs91@hotmail.com or our friend Ms. Tena at tjp@mygrande.net and ask more about me. I am so looking forward to my new forever home! Mika is located in Live Oak (San Antonio), TX. Adopter must pick up. She is spayed, HW Neg, and current on vaccinations. Adoption fee $350.00 Applications may be submitted at www.dalmatianrescueco.org   If interested in this dog, please go to www.dalmatianrescueco.org and submit an application for adoption. Under Adoptions, please read our adoption policy.  We must have an application before we can begin the adoption process and each dog does have foster contact listed. August 9, 2024, 8:40 am

Story
Sometimes we stretch the definition of Dalmatian when we accept dogs into our rescue. Skittles is one of these cases. We’re calling him a hound mix with “a hint of Dalmatian”. This two-year-old boy was saved from the shelter’s euthanasia list with only minutes to spare! But he was so friendly and look, he has a couple of Dalmatian type spots on one ear! Skittles is deaf but this happy boy doesn’t let that hold him back. He will need a safe, fenced-in play area and lots of on-leash exercise. His new owner will be encouraged to train him with hand signals and preference will be given to adopters familiar with deaf dogs. Skittles gets along well with other dogs. This happy, energetic young boy is guilty of jumping up and will need gentle training to stop this behavior. But Skittles is crate trained, and does know “sit“. and he’s very willing to learn more! His exuberance and need for training makes us feel Skittles should be placed in a home without young children. Adults, possibly with teenagers, would be preferred. More than anything, Skittles loves cuddles and belly rubs. He came to us heartworm positive but is responding well to treatment which should be completed soon. To learn more about Skittles, contact Tena at tjp@mygrande.net. His adoption fee is $250.   If interested in this dog, please go to www.dalmatianrescueco.org and submit an application for adoption. Under Adoptions, please read our adoption policy.  We must have an application before we can begin the adoption process and each dog does have foster contact listed. August 9, 2024, 8:40 am

Story
Lyra is loving, playful, and cuddly. She is good with people of all kinds, including kids. She jumps sometimes when she is excited, but seems to learn quickly when training for most things. She is very smart and loves playing with and chasing other dogs more than anything, so would do well in a home that already has a dog. With people, she likes to play tug of war, keep away with her toys, or stretch out at our feet. She has puppy energy and could use some more general training, but is potty trained and only chews on her own toys. She is a wonderful and well-behaved dog. Unfortunately, Lyra has a high prey drive towards our cats, which has made it difficult for her to share our home. We have tried our best, but the stress on everyone involved is very high and all the animals deserve a more relaxed environment. We know Lyra will bring immense joy to her forever family. If you are looking for an active, loving companion, please take the time to meet her. You'll be glad you did.
