Story
Elektra is a smart, confident, and playful five-month-old German Shepherd mix who is always ready for an adventure. She’s a social butterfly when it comes to other dogs—she loves to play and is respectful when another dog tells her to back off. She’s eager to explore the world around her and would thrive in a home that keeps her active, engaged, and learning new things. She’s still working on crate and potty training, but she’s making good progress. She’s still a puppy, so patience and consistency will help her continue to improve. On walks, she gets excited when she sees other dogs and may bark out of pure enthusiasm, but she’s learning how to settle and focus. Elektra is affectionate and loves to stay close to her people. She’s got a bold and curious nature, always up for something new, and would do well in a home that provides structure, training, and plenty of opportunities to play. Whether she’s romping with another dog, going for a walk, or learning something new, she approaches life with enthusiasm. For someone looking for a fun, intelligent, and adventurous young pup, Elektra is ready to be your new best friend! At Green Dogs Unleashed (GDU), we are dedicated to ensuring the successful placement of our dogs in loving, permanent homes. Over the years, we have seen an increasing number of returns due to behavioral issues that could have been prevented with the right support. A significant percentage of these returns involve out-of-area clients or those who have not completed training with GDU. To address this, positive reinforcement training with Green Dogs Unleashed is required as a condition for all adoptions. Preference for this dog will be given to adopters who commit to signing up for and completing our six-week Canine 101 training class in person at our headquarters in Troy, VA. Secondary consideration will be given to a limited number of out-of-area adopters who agree to complete one private lesson with GDU, either in person or virtually, and attend a pre-approved positive reinforcement training class in their area. Story
Woody is a young, energetic, and eager-to-please German Shepherd who is looking for an active home that can match his enthusiasm for life. At around one to two years old, he has all the classic traits of a young shepherd—smart, playful, and loyal to his people. He thrives on activity and engagement, whether that’s playing fetch, going for walks, or just hanging out with his favorite humans. Woody is house-trained, crate-trained, and well-behaved indoors. He settles easily in his crate at night and is always up for a game of tug or fetch during the day. He’s particularly fond of simple pleasures—give him a stick, and he’s just as happy as if you gave him the fanciest toy. He has done well with other dogs in his foster home, especially puppies, and seems to enjoy playing the role of a gentle babysitter. He hasn’t been around small adult dogs or children, so slow introductions would be needed in those cases. On walks, Woody can be a bit of a handful, but he’s easily managed with a Gentle Leader and responds well to direction. He’s smart, trainable, and always looking to his person for guidance. A home with plenty of space to romp, regular exercise, and mental stimulation will help him thrive. If you’re looking for a loving, energetic, and loyal shepherd who’s ready for adventure, Woody is your guy. He just needs the right home to help him channel all that energy into being the perfect companion. Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Dopey INDEED. This is one googley-eyed goofball. Dopey has MAD PUPPY energy - a real wild child! He's still very young (hasn't quite grown into his paws...or his satellite ears) and is WIDE OPEN, but he is SO sweet & eager. His tail never stops wagging and he's all around a happy boi. Dopey loves treats (responds to "sit"!), giving kisses, rawhides & PLAYING. With consistent and firm training, he has all the potential to be a wonderful pup with a hilarious personality. He's shown to be very attentive young guy and not as difficult to manage on a leash as one might expect - still all over the place, but he means well. With other dogs, Dopey seems to want to play, which is great, but he'll need consistent socialization while he's still young to make sure he stays that way! NO CATS for this dope, though! By the way, he has no table manners, absolutely needs potty-training and thinks counter surfing is the most funnest (his word, not ours) thing to do. That being said, if you're up for the most rewarding challenge with the sweetest, dopiest pup ever, CALL THE SHELTER TO SCHEDULE A MEET & GREET! updated 2/05/25

Story
bio notes: Sweet, high-energy lady! Very people-oriented and doesn't seem to wander far from your side. Has zero manners as she was one of the pups from the emergency shelter seizure case, along with 13 others. She loves affection and attention. She gets nippy when excited/playful since she hasn't been taught otherwise. For this reason, we would be extremely cautious for her to free-roam around youngsters. She is receptive to "no," however; and is very attention-motivated - she just wants to please and she is VERY smart! Cats are LIKELY no-go. updated 1/03/25

Story
What a sweet boy! Rufus seems to be an even split between Blood Hound and Shepherd. He's basically a miniature horse. He has the gentlest temperament and LOOK AT THOSE BIG, SAD PUPPY DOG EYES! He is a bit pully, so he will need leash training, but his personality is all Gentle Giant. He doesn't realize how big he is and loves to give hugs. Overall, Rufus is one BIG goofball ready to find his forever home! We're not sure how he does with cats, but we suspect he's good with other sweet pups and kids (we think he might be a lot for littles, so we recommend 8+). If you're into goofy, doofy dogs, you've struck gold with Rufus! Visit him at the shelter to find out for yourself! updated 01/23/25

Story
GSD/Husky/Lab/Catahoula mixFour year old Dexter W. is a mixture of Labrador, GSD, Husky and Catahoula. His former owner’s parents have recently taken him in and he is just too much dog for them. They describe him as “a fun, smart and energetic companion. He loves to be near us and is a loyal best friend who loves to play.”  They believe he would be best with a family with older children or a family of young adults because of his energy level.  He has never been around cats. Story
Willy is a goofy 3 y.o. boy who needs an owner experienced with training and socializing dogs, best with someone who can deal with working dogs like a Malinois. He is originally from the streets of Texas and as a result has issues with boundaries and attention, but he is learning very fast. I'm working on obedience in the home (leaving my cat alone) and on walks (paying attention to me, ignoring other dogs). He was originally pretty reactive to dogs, large men, and squirrels but with training he has gotten a lot better. He is smart!! and learns commands within a couple reps, but he NEEDS someone who can provide that structure. He has been to the dog park and gets along well with most large dogs but is a dominant player which can be an issue with anxious dogs, puppies, or small dogs. I would love to stay in contact with his forever family and help provide for him, he's a very sweet boy.
