Story
Bonnie is a 4 year old, 52lb Golden Retriever, who arrived as a stray. She’s an incredibly sweet, affectionate girl and we’re happy to tell you more about her.Bonnie’s absolute favorite things include giving/receiving affection, going on car rides (she’s perfectly mannered both in the car and in public), getting pets and cuddles, going for walks, and being brushed. She’s also obsessed with her stuffed animals—her “babies”—and loves to carry them around and play gently with them. As a treat- and food-motivated pup, she’s eager to please when snacks are involved! Bonnie is a true “velcro dog”—she loves being near her people as much as possible. However, she’s still working on respecting personal space, especially when someone is sitting or laying down. She will need continued guidance and consistency to help her learn appropriate boundaries. She is very quiet (almost never barks), fully potty trained, and gets along well with other dogs and cats (her prey drive is very minimal and manageable with a “no chase” cue). She is always ready for a scratch behind the ears, or belly rub, but her super power is a good game of fetch! Bonnie cannot be kenneled, as it leads to destructive behavior or even self-harm. She experiences separation anxiety, which is currently being managed with medication:• Fluoxetine (20mg daily) for overall mental health—her vet may recommend a dosage adjustment soon.• Trazodone (150mg) given 1.5–2 hours before being left alone to help ease her anxiety.Bonnie has focal seizures, which the Fluoxetine is expected to help with. While Bonnie is intelligent and capable, she can be stubborn and doesn’t reliably respond to commands like “no,” “off,” “leave it,” or “down” when it comes to personal space. She would benefit greatly from ongoing obedience training and someone with patience and consistency.Bonnie is living in a foster home but is available to meet during the week. Please fill out a consultation form and we’ll ask one of our adoption counselors to give you a call and give you more info about her, and find out more about what you’re looking for in a pup. If it’s potentially a good match, we’ll set up an appointment with the foster home. You are also welcome to come and see us in person and speak with an adoption counselor if you’d prefer to do that. Please go to our website to fill out a consultation form: https://us06d.sheltermanager.com/service?account=zp1008&method=online_form_html&formid=6 and we’ll have someone reach out to you. We do require any family interested in meeting our dogs and/or cats to fill out a consultation form – this form helps us determine if the dog/cat and the home are a good match, since it is so easy to fall in love with a photo, without knowing the personality / needs of the dog / cat. Please note that ALL dogs and cats are available to the first home that meets the dog or cat that we feel is a good match. An inquiry on a dog or cat does not automatically put that dog or cat on hold for anyone. If there’s more than one family at our facility at the same time that’s interested in a dog , we will hold a lottery with all families that are a good match. In order to help make the best match, we do want all family members (dogs and humans) to meet any potential new family member. Our adoption center hours are: Closed Sunday/Monday; Tuesday 10a-2p, Wednesday 3p-7p, Thursday 3p-7p, Friday 10a-2p, Saturday 10a-4p. We are located at 952 W Melody Avenue in Gilbert (zip code 85233).Thank you for looking to adopt!
