Story
Meet Bartlett! This adorable gray 8yr old Havanese gentleman is 11lbs of love. He loves to play, cuddle and hugs. His adorable underbite always makes him look curious or smiling as he bounces up to every person or dog he meets. He had no problem with walking through busy sidewalks, loud noises or meeting other animals. He is peepad and crated trained, and 90% housetrained. Some of his favorite things is cuddling at your feet, treats and food puzzles. If you're looking for the biggest lover who will greet you his flag like wagging tale every time you walk in the door and loves snuggling , he might be your perfect match. Bartlett is currently being fostered in Union City, NJ. His adoption fee is $325. To adopt this animal, please visit https://www.louieslegacy.org/adopt All of our animals come spayed or neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, are microchipped, heartworm negative, current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention, dewormed, and treated for any ailments found upon veterinary examination. The adoption fee covers a portion of these services, and makes it possible for us to continue rescuing animals. For more information on the adoption fees and the adoption process, please complete our adoption application here: https://www.louieslegacy.org/adopt - an application allows us to get to know your family better so we can assess whether the animal you are interested in is a good match for your home. An application does not obligate you to adopt. Please understand that due to the volume of applications some animals receive, we are unable to contact all applicants. If your application is considered a good fit for the animal you are interested in, or even a different pet, a volunteer will give you a call as soon as possible. We are a foster based rescue and do not have a shelter location where animals can be seen during the week. Please see our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LouiesLegacy for our weekly adoption album if you are interested in meeting an animal in person. Not all animals attend every adoption event, please check our Facebook page for animal event times and locations before you make a trip to meet a specific animal.

Story
❗Current location: in a private shelter in South Korea❗ Meet June👋 an adorable friendly Terrier mix with Shih Tzu's mouth! June was found in front of a military base in South Korea in May 2018 when he was just 5 months old. He was then taken to the local private shelter just before the euthanasia notice at a high-kill city pound. Despite his wonderful personality and temperament, June has not been adopted or fostered yet. Sadly, his appearance has deterred potential adopters. June truly deserves a loving home where he can thrive! • Personality: Affectionate, Chill, Goofy June has grown into a very affectionate and friendly dog who loves being around people. His calm yet lovely temperament has made him a favorite among all our volunteers, who fell in love with him instantly. In the dog run, June is a sight to behold. He loves to lie down and relax in the middle of the run, showing off his calm/goofy demeanor. Noise doesn't bother him, and he adapts well to different environments. June has a moderate energy level, meaning he knows when to play energetically and when to switch to a more relaxed mode. He is excellent when it comes to taking baths at the shelter, showing his cooperative side. • Affinity with - Dogs: He has a selective preference regarding canine friends. He gets along with other dogs that he likes regardless of their size, but he gives a warning signal to those he doesn't like. - Cats: Not tested. - Adults/Kids: Good with people in general including new faces / Not tested for children. • Walking Manners: Just like his calm demeanor, he is very gentle and good on a leash although he has limited opportunities to go for walks in a shelter. He seems to enjoy it whenever he gets a chance! • Housetrained: Needs work as he is currently living with a group of dogs – he knows how to use the indoor pee pads as well! • Bathing/Brushing: Good with both. • Car Sickness: Not tested • Separation Anxiety: None • Barks/Howls: Only growls/barks a little bit as a warning sign to large-sized dogs • Appetite/Food Allergies: No allergies / Not a picky eater! • Shedding level (1~10): 5-6 • Likes/Dislikes: He loves people, walks, and cuddly blankets!

Story
Puppy mills are the bane of our existence, and dogs like Harper are the reason why 😡 Just 3-4 years old, she is one of the lucky ones actually. She got out young and without any major health issues, but the psychological scars of living in a cage with no positive human interaction are lasting. Her only joy in life came from her doggie companions, and with other dogs she’s a happy normal playful pup and a lot of fun. But she doesn’t see humans as a source of joy or comfort at this point. She knows us as a source of food and something that opens doors and gates for her, and she looks happy to see us and will come to us for food or run out happily in the fenced yard with all the other dogs when let out. But she always tries to stay just out of reach and hasn’t learned to enjoy handling or petting just yet. Once you “catch” her she gives in and allows it, and starts to relax a bit more the longer you hold her. But she will likely always be skittish and not a lap dog, or may take years to really bond to someone. Harper’s paperwork labeled her as a schnauzer or schnoodle, but we don’t see it. She looks more like a Havanese or Lhasa-poo maybe? With a long body and short legs, about 15lbs full grown, spayed and updated on shots, and a non-shedding wavy coat, and soulful eyes, she’s a beautiful girl who lost her chance at being a carefree family pet thanks to human greed. Dogs like Harper are very special to us and require special homes. It’s not about molding them into what people want them to be, but rather meeting them on their terms and figuring out how to make them as happy as possible. She is happy living in a “pack” and definitely needs at least one other doggie friend in the household to learn from, play with, and follow. She’s a homebody who may never really enjoy walks and outings, and thrives on a consistent routine. She will be a major flight risk always if she ever gets loose especially in an unfamiliar place so extra care and paranoia is necessary to make sure that doesn’t happen, and she will go home with a secure martingale collar and air tag. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Harper in Northern NJ if you have some dogs who would like to take her under their wing and show her how to be happy. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Senior Simba is really embracing his Lion King 🦁 namesake after his neuter and dental! Hey, if you have to wear the cone of shame, you might as well look cute doing it! Our senior boy had to have most of his teeth removed as they were pretty rotted. His bloodwork was pretty good for an old man, and he has some early heart disease and is on one medication longterm to help support his cardiac function. He has some arthritis but gets around really well and still does his cute begging dance for attention especially if crated. He was living pretty much around the clock in a crate in his last home because his elderly owner wasn’t able to take care of him, and is so happy to be getting more attention and freedom. We were told he wasn’t always the friendliest, but a lot of it seemed to be centered around frustration of being kept crated so much. So far we have only seen his demon side when shaving his matted legs 🤷‍♀️, and he’s been getting along with other dogs and been a pleasant little guy. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Simba in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Heathcliff the 5 year old male Havanese. New arrival rescued from a puppy mill and terrified of being touched but curious and already wagging his tail and coming up and taking treats. He was being picked on by other dogs in the mill but loves gentle sweet doggie friends. We hate puppy mills, but we love our puppy mill survivors ❤️ Most of our dogs come from local animal control facilities and homes that can’t keep them, but saving puppy mill dogs has always been a big part of our rescue’s mission over the past 20+ years. Since long before it was cool and every rescue and fake scam rescue around started buying up and selling supposed reject tiny mill puppies and flipping them for high adoption fees to make a profit, we have been rescuing and rehabilitating the sad scared semi-feral medically needy retired moms and dads. Our major life goal is to get dogs out of bad situations and into better ones, and few things are worse than puppy mill life, exploited in a cage for years on end with minimal human contact or medical care, just being used as breeding machines. It sounds like some type of dystopian horror story, but puppy mills are very real and common, kept alive by the selfish desire of consumers to be able to get a puppy of any breed or mix they want immediately shipped to them without caring about the consequences for the parents left behind. Some puppy mill rescues might have been treated slightly better than others and come to us in better shape emotionally and medically. But the vast majority of them (and the most challenging yet rewarding to help) come to us semi-feral and scared out of their minds of human touch, clinging to any doggie friend they can find as their only source of joy and security. They all have some challenges to overcome as they learn how to live in homes for the first time. Leash-walks, housebreaking, playing with toys, and cuddling are all foreign and scary concepts, but with time, patience, doggy role models, and the right caring patient people they learn at their own speed. We currently have 7 little non-shedding puppy mill survivors available, all 3-5 years old and varying levels of shyness. All REQUIRE another dog in the household to help them feel safe and have a role model and to look up to and copy (good habits and bad). Email njwoof@cs.com to meet any of our little survivors in northern NJ. If a puppy mill survivor isn’t the right match for you, we have lots of locally rescued dogs who have lived in homes, so please reach out to find a match Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
