Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Hazel. Little old lady Hazel is an enigma. Hazel was found as a stray in Culpeper County, VA. She hung out at the shelter for a couple of months and appeared to not be able to be handled much by humans. There was something about trying to eat the vet. But one person at the shelter worked really hard to gain her trust and was able to handle her. We decided to get her out of the shelter to see how she did in a less stressful environment. We got her home and she appeared to have zero redeeming qualities. She is kind of cute, but she spent most of her time biting at our shoes and picking fights with our bigger dogs, especially when there was food involved. There was some discussion about whether we could ever adopt her out. I give every dog a chance, so I drugged her so we could handle her to do a dental, spay, and remove 6 mammary tumors. Over a thousand dollars later, Hazel came home a new woman. Overnight, she stopped being mean (for the most part). She stopped snapping and doing most of her crabby behavior. It turns out she was in pain---her teeth weren’t even that bad. I don’t know what exactly happened or felt better, but she is a (mostly) changed woman. Hazel now follows me everywhere (she prefers women to men), cuddles in bed, and doesn’t try to eat our feet anymore. She does still start crap with other dogs if there is food involved; some things never change. So let me tell you about Hazel 2.0 She really likes food, and she will protect people food with her life. She loves to meander around the yard and I think would be fine off leash as long as you had a way to recall her---she’s mostly deaf. She will cuddle and she is happy to just hang out. She will bark when she’s “abandoned” ie not on the same side of the door as you. She’s an old lady who has had a rough life. I think she’d LOVE to be an only dog or with a dog who never gets near her food. Hazel is ready to go home. She had a home once and someone abandoned her. She’d love a place to lie in the sun and nap. If you’re interested in adopting Hazel, she’s all of ten pounds, but you’ll need to sedate her to get her groomed or go to the vet (I’m no shady used car salesman---I put it all out there). Her breed? When she first arrived we would have made jokes about her being The Devil’s Spawn, but now that she’s feeling better we think maybe a little dachshund, some jack russell, and some chihuahua. Maybe some rat terrier or heeler in there. She is a mix of ALL the small dogs with bad attitudes Hazel is somewhere around 11 years old. She’s currently in Charlottesville, VA, but is willing to travel to get out of her foster home, where she claims the accomodations are sub-par. Hurry and adopt her today before someone else does!I   Oh, and she prefers to go to the bathroom outside but is great about using pee pads if necessary. Story
Teddy is a wonderful companion for you & another dog. He did not do well in a home with small children but would be a perfect match for kids 10+. He has some high energy but can also jump right up into the couch potato role. He loves attention & must have another companion. Teddy should have a fenced in yard as he displays tendencies to be a flight risk, but once he is comfortable, & with proper training, he would be suitable for off leash adventures. Good with cats! He listens well & is very treat oriented. He definitely wants to please. Originally from the streets of Texas, Teddy found himself adopted by a loving family in the Shenandoah Valley in VA but became nippy with the 5 yr old in the home. He would be a perfect dog for someone with another dog with his energy level. He came into the program under the name of Shadow & is said to be crate & doggie door trained. $75 adoption fee is payable to the local rescue & apps will be fully researched.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.   Spidey is a handsome, compact terrier mix with a ton of enthusiasm, athleticism, and intelligence. He is one good-looking dog! He greets everyone he meets with smiles. His youthful attitude is contagious. This perky guy is ready to learn and to experience the world with someone willing to give him a little basic training. He is starting training with our friends at Camp Merricks, and they will help whoever adopts him with the transition to his new home. There probably isn't much Spidey can't do. He is a great size at 37 lbs so he can go anywhere you want to go. Spidey is clean in his room. And even though he always looks for attention, he isn’t a big barker. Spidey is thrilled with his new toys here and loves getting stuffed Kongs or Nylabones at the end of the day. When he’s walked past other dogs hootin’ and hollering at him, he just stays with his handler and ignores all their noise.Spidey has been in the shelter for almost three months now and is starting to feel the stress. We get him out to play and he has lots of toys and people to walk him, but it's still a stressful place. If you are a terrier fan and like a dog with a lot of personality, Spidey has it. Fill out an application today and come by to meet Spidey!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.    March 9, 2025, 6:45 am
