Story
Meet Leia, a lovable lab mix with a big heart. Her irresistible sweetness and friendly nature draw everyone in. Playful and energetic, she brightens any moment, and her cuddly warmth brings comfort on chilly nights. While she's outgoing, she has a shy side, waiting to bloom in the right environment. Adopt Leia and let her fill your life with joy! Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their size in a group setting, and dog meet-and-greets with the adopter's dog(s) are always encouraged. A cat test may be conducted at the adopter's request but should only be used as a general-purpose screening to rule out overt aggression. We always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendations on the suitability of placement with children by age are based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavioral observations in the shelter environment should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at a given point in time and may not be indicative of a dog's overall mental health. The Joplin Humane Society believes all adopters need to be prepared to invest time and energy into working with their new dog, as animals arrive at the shelter from a variety of situations and scenarios and may have had little to no prior training. Dogs should never be fed together unless it is known that they do not possess resource-guarding tendencies. We always encourage adopters to research the breeds or mixes of breeds before adoption as many can have unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Keep in mind that the transition from the shelter to a home environment is stressful for dogs, and the Rule of 3 should be used as a rule of thumb when introducing a dog to their new surroundings. For the first 3 days, fear, anxiety, and stress levels are at their highest; and dogs may appear lethargic, remain hidden, are easily excitable, or have a loss of appetite. In the next 3 weeks, dogs will be actively developing a routine, and new personality traits may appear as stress levels decrease. During this period, it is recommended that adopters limit the dog's exposure to new people and places as they adjust and keep them in a crate or designated quiet room when left alone. Time outside of the home should be short, and crowds or loud noise should be avoided. After 3 months, a bond has developed between the dogs and their new family, and the animal should appear more comfortable in unfamiliar situations. For more information about this dog or any others at our Shelter, please visit www.joplinhumane.org. We are the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, Missouri. 417-623-3642. Story
Hi my name is Curly and I have a great story to tell. I am a good boy that’s shy and unsure at first. People, car rides, and loud noises scare me. So I need a home that is quiet and 1-2 people at most would be best. I do great with other dogs, they bring me out of my shell. I know I’m not for everyone but I am the right one for the special person, who can work with me and go at my slow pace, who won’t get frustrated that the world is sometimes scary to me and I need time and help figuring it out. I really want to be loved and give you love, it will just take time, trust, and understanding. I am kennel trained, house trained, and like the backyard. Leash walks are not my favorite but I am working on that. Since I am scared, I like to be able to go in and out of my kennel when I am scared or just feel like it. If you want a special dog that’s not like everyone else, but will always hold a special place in your heart…. I am your boy! I have been around dogs and cats with no issues. I've also been around kids, but I prefer to keep to myself when little ones are around. I'm also crate and housetrained, neutered, heartworm negative, and have age-appropriate vaccinations!  If you're interested in adopting, please email your phone number to rockcityrescue@gmail.comAugust 20, 2024, 12:05 am

Story
Hi, my name is Moe! If you are looking for a special dog, you are barking up the right tree! What makes me special is that life started out a little shaky for me and has left me more nervous and scared than the average dog. With time, understanding, patience, and building trust I will open up and be the best companion you could want! As the saying goes, I stick to the 3’s. I need 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks of a consistent routine and time to learn it & 3 months to start feeling at home. At first, I am more comfortable with other dogs and people really scare me, so I would do best with an outgoing friendly dog in the house to show me how to feel comfortable and confident. As time goes on, I get more used to humans but would do best in a single-person home or just a couple (too many people or a lot of children will be too much for me). I like my kennel and my safe dark space. I will come around and hang out more when I trust it is safe. I am kennel trained and working on being better with the leash. If you are looking for an amazing but special dog who needs a little bit of a calmer lifestyle, I am your man!!!! Email your phone number to rockcityrescue@gmail.com for more info! Story
Nami is a beautiful, young lab mix who has been in our shelter for over 100 days now. This girl is SO smart and would absolutely thrive in an active home with someone who enjoys training or going on adventures outdoors. Nami already knows sit, down, and shake, and she walks well on a leash too! She is still very young and has a lot of energy so her ideal person should be patient and understanding and willing to work with her while she adjusts to life outside of the shelter. She is so so sweet and very kennel stressed in our facility, we would love to see her get out of here asap! Nami is sponsored, adoption fee is only $25!Nami has been patiently waiting for her forever family since July, and despite her sweet nature, no one has shown interest in her yet. This 2-year-old beauty was brought in by animal control after being found as a stray, and the shelter environment has been hard on her. She weighs about 40 pounds, the perfect medium size for snuggling, walks, and adventures! She adores people and is always ready to greet you with a wagging tail. She’s dog-friendly, indifferent to cats, and takes treats from your hand with the sweetest, softest touch.Nami deserves a life where she can truly shine, so if you’re ready to welcome an amazing companion into your home, please fill out an adoption application using the link below or come meet her in person during our open hours! She’s here, waiting for her second chance at happiness… could that be with you?Adoption Application: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScbRHljwkHKaRSHgBuiT-m-SEsXLGHNRcfimGECvqxBeBSplQ/viewform
