Meet Elmer – Your Loyal Little Gentleman Don’t let the salt-and-pepper age fool you—Elmer is young at heart, with the charm of a wise old soul and the energy of a dog half his age when it’s mealtime! This dapper gentleman is the perfect blend of affectionate lapdog and gentle sidekick. Elmer lives for companionship, and his favorite place in the world is right next to his human. He’s a polite house guest—crate trained, leash trained, and a pro in the car. While he does like to “announce” visitors like any good doggy doorman, he warms up to new people within minutes. Other dogs? No problem—Elmer gets along with dogs of all sizes and doesn’t bat an eyelash when the little ones bark at him. He's the picture of even-tempered and submissive around his four-legged friends. Due to some dental drama, the shelter estimates him at 12, but his sprightly spirit (and un-grayed muzzle) might suggest closer to 10. Either way, he's a distinguished pup who knows what he wants: a comfy home, a warm lap, a loving human, and a regular potty schedule (belly bands help, and he’s great with them!). Elmer’s a food-time twirler—watch him rise up on his hind legs and spin in happy little circles when he sees you prepping dinner. He may need a little help getting onto the couch, but he’ll let you know he’s ready to snuggle by putting his front paws up like a tiny gentleman requesting a dance. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a gentle soul, expressive eyes, and a heart full of love, Elmer’s your guy. He’s ready to spend his golden years being your best friend. *This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and recommendations to keep your senior dog in top shape. Elmer is from Texas. They arrive in Minnesota on 5/3/2025 and will need to be picked up from the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton, MN between the hours of 9am and noon. Please plan for their arrival accordingly as we cannot accommodate pickups outside of this time frame. Since they haven’t arrived yet, they are available exclusively through Ruff Start’s Foster to Adopt (FTA) Program. Click here to learn more about the FTA program. Once they get to Minnesota, they might require further veterinary care. Ruff Start’s veterinary suite is located in Princeton, MN, and, as the foster, you will be required to transport your dog to and from these vetting appointments. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.
