Story
Location: Kitchener, ON Dog’s Name: Lennox Breed: Mini Poodle Weight: 15 lbs Gender: Male Spayed/neutered: yes Age: 5 Reason for Intake: Retired breeding dog from a puppy mill Medical (shots etc): UTD Good with dogs: Yes, needs some redirecting but hopefully that will be resolved with neuter. Overall his communication skills with other dogs is excellent. He is curious/playful but respectful if they give cues to leave him alone. Good with cats: yes he does well with confident cats, could chase a more fearful one but he does not seem very interested at all in my 2 cats beyond investigating them/seeing what they are Good with kids: untested but i think he'd do well as long as they were older with no sudden movements (like those of toddlers). He is skittish with sudden movements, not aggressive Good with strangers: curious and will approach eventually if they get low but can be unsure if they move quickly. He will just avoid, he has not barked or growled at anyone. Guarding issues: none seen to date Ever bitten a human: no attempts seen, he tends to choose flight or freeze if unsure Ever bitten a dog: no; he seems great with dogs Behavioural issues: marking (improved a LOT since intake and easily managed with belly band, though he has been good in the house without belly band after 2 weeks of using it), he does pick up items and prance with them - I do not think he's trying to steal/attention seek, I think when he's overstimulated he does it to manage his own excitement. He makes no attempt to guard the items and it's easy to take them/trade for treat, or just let him carry it around if it's safe for him to do so (preferred option would be to have lots of appropriate options around for him to pick up and carry). Housetrained: improving but not 100% reliable yet. Within 2 weeks he was quickly pottying in certain spots outdoors and not trying to mark in the house. Crate trained: yes, he may complain here and there but he settles himself easily and no signs of separation anxiety/confinement stress Destructive when left alone: I think he may chew things if left alone but he does well being crated. Barks when left alone: no Leash skills: he's learning to walk on a 10 ft leash right now and doing very well. It is NOT a heel by any stretch but he does well keeping it loose/responding to leash pressure to move him away from things Handling issues: none seen Known commands: leash up/leash off, go pee/poo, go to bed/mat work, responding to name, default sit/down, 1-2-3 for predictability about being picked up Food on now: First mate lamb & blueberries Medical issues: none seen aside from initial yeast infection in ears which has resolved since intake. He also had a number of sore spots (assuming urine burning) and I think maybe fly bites on his ears when he came that have healed up well. Personality, likes/dislikes: he really just wants to cuddle and be near someone who will sit with him and take their time. Outside he likes to prance around on a 10 ft line, he does seem to enjoy walking and sniffing around Best home scenario: Ideal home would have other dogs to model how to live in a house. He did best learning how to go in/out of doors, figure out stairs and different flooring with another confident dog to copy. He really does seem more relaxed and confident with another dog around than he is on his own. So far he can be left in the crate for 2-3 hrs at a time - we haven't tried longer but I think he'd probably be able to work up to 5-6 hrs at a time pretty easily. He's pretty low energy/doesn't need super long walks but does like to sniff and explore a lot so someone willing to meet his needs that way and then let him chill out at their feet/beside them on the couch.
