Miniature Poodle puppies and dogs in Exeter, Ontario

Introducing sweet Jemi 3 yr female (spayed) mini poodle/bernese mountain dog mix, Jemi weighs 25 lbs with a long lean body type more similar to her poodle side of genetics. She is desperate to love and be loved. A true velcro dog once she finds a connection. Our trainer feels that Jemi would be fine with other dogs in her home as long as they are not overly submissive (can be bullied) or too reactive. She uses her current canine foster friends to gauge the “temperature of situations” and I think that without dogs she will panic and emotionally shut down. Jemi doesn’t really play with the dogs in her foster home. She loves to chew on toys and is quick to come to people for affection once she feels safe. She must have a securely fenced in yard in her new home to meet her specific needs as a flight risk. Jemi would not do well in apartments or condos. PLEASE READ HER ENTIRE PROFILE BEFORE APPLYING ENERGY LEVEL: medium DOG'S DAILY ROUTINE FOR EXERCISE, TRAINING ETC Jemi is a funny dog who adores spending time with her people. She wants love and time to build a relationship through confidence building and positive experiences. FOOD MOTIVATED? Jemi is food motivated when she is calm enough to accept treats Jemi loves attention! She will push between her foster dog siblings and anyone willing to share love, so having dogs in the home would need to be those not objecting to Jemi's attention seeking behaviour with their humans. She loves any physical contact and always wants to be close. On walks, Jemi shows interest in other dogs but is nervous of their owners. She has difficulty sharing her favourite resources with other dogs in her foster home and would thrive in a home with a dog who is easygoing or assertive but not dominant or aggressive. She guards her toys by persistently hanging onto them and repeatedly hiding them. Jemi is nervous of people due to a very poor handling. She requires slow, gentle introductions and many positive experiences with the same person to feel truly comfortable. Jemi will bark at people coming into the home until she can sniff the person and get petted by them. GOOD WITH CATS? Jemi generally ignores the cat in her foster home. She does not want to interact with it. ANY GUARDING BEHAVIOURS before Jemi trusted other pets, she guarded spaces like the couch from other dogs. When this happened, she was lifted off the couch when she showed guarding behaviour and she'd quickly find a new spot and she learned that this behaviour is not permitted. She no longer guards any spaces from other dogs. HOUSETRAINED? Yes CRATE TRAINED? Jemi loves to relax in the crate and sleep in it at night. She goes into the crate willingly and feels comfortable in that space. DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG SHOW SIGNS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY? No LEASH SKILLS. Jemi is becoming more comfortable walking on leash, and she is becoming very interested in the smells around her and in the grass. She still bolts to the end of the leash at loud sounds like a bus exhaust or loud motorcycle and will need time to trust herself in her environment. She is walked using both a harness and a non slip collar linked with a coupler for added safety GROOMING HANDLING Jemi avoids being touched if possible, but is compliant if necessary. She is nervous and submissive due to her history of being poorly handled. PERSONALITY/TEMPERAMENT Jemi is eager to please and truly wants to be loved and safe. Jemi needs to become more confident. Confidence building activities like training games, time outside, meeting new people in a low stress way will help her become a great companion. Jemi can get overexcited and paw at people for affection. She jumps around and paws repeatedly at her humans in the mornings and when they return from work and this is a behaviour we are working to reduce using redirection and only rewarding other behaviours like touching people with her nose instead of pawing. MEDICAL NOTES-Jemi needs her ears cleaned frequently. She had a variety of parasites when she arrived into rescue and has been treated and tested monthly along with her Advantage Multi topical applied every four weeks to manage hookworm. Jemi started her journey in foster vomiting multiple times each day and after every meal. It is unclear if this was due to her previous food type, parasites or nerves (or a combination).This has settled down and she still vomits a small amount of food a few times a week, usually after she gets over excited. FOOD AMOUNT/TYPE: Jemi gets 3/4 of pound of raw food split into several portions throughout the day. Maintaining a raw food diet seems to be a big part in her overcoming her past digestive issues. FEEDING ROUTINES: Food and supplements are mixed together and Jemi gets fed first (before other dogs). She needs a safe place to eat in comfort and safety to limit pacing and gulping her food. Jemi builds her relationships, in part based on who brings her food, so her new owners should take turns feeding her to help build her trust. POTTY HABITS: Jemi will sometimes not pee if she does not feel safe. Currently, she only wants to go outside and urinate and defecate in the presence of a single one of her foster family members. We are actively working to expand this social circle and increase her comfort peeing on leash and in new environments. Skills/Commands SIT? No STAY? No WAIT? No LAY DOWN? No LEAVE IT? No OFF? Yes DOWN? No COME? No Jemi will come to her primary foster if called in a sweet high pitched way. She is beginning to respond to the command "touch" by booping an outstretched hand for a treat and this is one way we can redirect her from barking. CURRENT ROUTINES AND PREFERENCES THAT WILL HELP THE DOG SETTLE INTO THEIR NEW HOME: Jemi gets up at 6:30 am with the foster and other dogs, she is then uncrated, goes outside to pee, lounges until breakfast, eats and goes for a short walk. She pees again around 8:00am and then she spends the day loose on the mainfloor of the home with two other dogs and a cat mainly sleeping and looking outside or chewing toys. Foster dad works from home, but on another floor, blocked by a baby gate. She hangs out with the foster during lunch, but currently will refuse to go outside with him or the other dogs. At approx.4:30 pm when foster mom is home, she will go outside with the other dogs and pee, gets fed at 6pm. Then she does some activities, or goes for a walk, gets groomed etc and hangs out in her crate, until last pee and then in a crate overnight. STRENGTHS/AREAS THEY HAVE IMPROVED ON: Jemi is less jumpy, less submissive and more bouncy. She is becoming interested in the world around her and sometimes takes treats outside. Jemi has learned to love to chew and play with toys, she is attention and love seeking TRANSPORTATION-ANY MOTION SICKNESS OR ANXIETY IN VEHICLES? Jemi is very quiet when travelling and is on medicine for anxiety and it helps her to handle car trips although she sometimes vomits or drools on long drives, so crating is recommended. Jemi needs a home where everyone will commit to forming a bond with her. She would like a fairly small social circle where she can become comfortable and feel safe in a home that is not chaotic or too loud. Jemi will need a yard to have freedom outside as long as her human companion is close by to help her feel safe and play with her. She loves quiet outdoor spaces and long forest walks.
