Story
Oscar is a wonderful 6 year old miniature schnauzer. He was surrendered to the shelter for barking all day, while his owner was away. If you are familiar with the schnauzer breed, Oliver has many of their standard traits, a little anxiety, a lot of bark, super Velcros to his people, and very SMART! Unfortunately, we quickly realized he was suffering from a bladder stone which we had surgically removed. He will require a prescription food from the vet for the rest of his life. The type of stones he has may recur, even with the help of the food, so his new owner must be prepared for a bladder surgery if needed. our vet noted a slight heart murmur, which is causing no issues, but should be checked annually by a vet.He did exhibit separation anxiety in his previous home, so his new family must be on board with his needs. Oscar is a very good dog, but has had an unfortunate history we will never know, and has some behavioral issues that we will discuss fully if an adopter meets his needs for a future home. He stays on two anxiety medications, which help him tremendously and working with his new vet, these should be continued during his transition. He takes a very long time to be comfortable around new people. He becomes very nervous if he is picked up or held or if you grab at his collar. He does very well if you keep a short leash on him and responds well to direction. He feels very secure in his kennel and retreats there often, so his new home must provide him this safe space where he is never disturbed. Oliver is a major Velcro dog and wants to be with his people at all times, so we are looking for a forever family where he will not be left alone for long periods of time. He has done very well with his foster brothers and sisters and really follows their lead on how to stay calm. A gentle furry friend or two would be ideal for him. He is good with cats. He can be reactive when he is scared, so we will not place him in a home with small children or where children and guests visit frequently. He has a history of dashing out open doors, so a secure fenced yard is a necessity. He pulls some when on his leash and is reactive to people and other dogs while on a leash, so this behavior will need to continue to be worked on. Oliver is crate and potty trained, but please remember the transition to a new home is stressful and new home routines may cause a few accidents. He requires regular grooming, at a professional groomers. Having said all that, he is great, obedient, potty and kennel trained. He is learning how to play and have fun. He is a good dog, but not for the casual dog owner, he must go to someone committed to him, good and bad - because he is going to have some hard times transitioning as he did coming in to his foster home. Due to his barking history, we will not be accepting applications for any type of apartment or attached home (ex. condo, apartment) residences, we appreciate your understanding!
