Story
Can you give this little old lady a loving home for her golden years? We don't know a ton about Harper's background since she was originally found as a stray in Yonkers, NY with a ruptured mass on her neck that was getting more and more infected. We are assuming that she's a purebred (due to cropped ears and docked tail) miniature schnauzer, but can't know for sure. What we do know for sure is that Harper is a senior (we're guessing somewhere around 12-16 years old) and that she didn't deserve for her last days to be spent wandering a city alone. So when the vet hospital that she had been brought into reached out to us, we were able to bring her back to the ranch and prevent her from being euthanized, and give her a chance to enjoy her golden years with love! While she was at the hospital, they removed her mass and tested it to confirm that there wouldn't be any further complications from it, and helped us start her on medication to manage her heart murmur. She recovered well from the surgery and came to us soon after! A few weeks later and Harper is thriving! She is a senior with some typical health complications due to age (slight sight impairment, hearing impairment, and some urine incontinence in her sleep), but each of these is manageable with patience and some tlc and we are confident she has a bright future ahead of her! Harper loves people and does well with the other dogs in her foster home as long as they leave her alone while she is eating (she takes meal time VERY seriously!). She walks well on leash and loves going for walks. When she's feeling rambunctious, she'll even run alongside you just to prove she is still young at heart! She loves to play dress up in cute sweaters and we are confident that at some point in her life she was adored, because she is very accustomed to being loved and doted on. If you are interested in being that person to love and dote on her, apply to adopt or foster her today! You can fill out either application for her on our website, waywardranch.org and let us know if you have any questions!

Story
Bug ended up in a rural shelter in TX where she was part of a litter that the owners no longer wanted to deal with. The shelter was full and was going to have to start euthanizing for space. There was a plea out for several dogs and we ended up saving a few from there. Bug is a very sweet energic little girl. She is now ready for her new home after being fixed, had all shots, micro chipped, heartworm negative and on monthly prevention. Loves to play with other dogs. If you are interested in this pretty girl please email us at Doginghamrescue@aol.com so we can send you an application. We are based in the Nashville, TN area and have most of our dogs transported up north. The $650 includes the adoption and transport fee (will have a health certificate too). The transport fee is not refundable if things do not work out.

Story
Paging Dr. Pigeon… Dr. P for short! This 17 lb, (estimated to be) 8 y/o small mixed breed butterball of a canine hails from our NY City shelter. It’s unclear how this sweet soul ended up in the overpopulated chaotic care center, but as the adage goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure – and a treasure he is! Dr. P is the ideal companion and will be the perfect addition to someone’s family. Dr. P is a gentleman and a scholar (we’re just not sure what kind of doctor he may be!). Maybe a love doctor? He’s especially fond of physical touch and words of affirmation. In fact, he’s got a quintessential charm about him with a goofy side. He’s equal parts independent (stubborn, too!) but will cozy up with you if you invite him. Dr. P is very well-mannered and will hop on furniture, if permitted. Otherwise, he’s equally content to snooze the day away on the floor, in a bed, or in his crate. He is house-trained and is very proud of his newly acquired “sit” command. He will definitely show off if you have treats – chicken is the way to his heart! Dr. P isn’t the biggest fan of being confined (imagine a pigeon in a coop) and will bark to let you know he’s displeased. But, he does appreciate the safety of his crate, when he can enter/exit on his own terms. In his foster home, he has been permitted free range, is not destructive in any way, but much prefers the company of another being over solitary time. He would do best in a home with another dog and/or where someone is home most of the day. It’s evident he’s accustomed to being with his human, so we will continue to work on separation anxiety training through positive reinforcement.  Wondering about his eye? It’s not a bother to him and will be cosmetically repaired in the near future. Dr. P has a condition known as a cherry eye, and has been cleared for surgery to make that red blemish go away and showcase those soulful brown puppy dog eyes he’s perfected. He will tug at your heartstrings with his very presence and sweet disposition.  Lastly a potential adopter should know, Dr. P does have medical needs that will require routine care and daily medications. Good news: they are very manageable and he takes his meds without a fuss in the morning and evening. dog-friendly kid-friendly (he’s very tolerant!) solid leash walker cats not tested but believed to be okay (the bodega cat catches his attention but there’s no reaction) snuggler (on his terms) Vaccinated for rabies, DA2PP, and bordetella. Neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.  To apply for Pigeon, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the dog is on our website, they are still available. Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue. Adoptions: adopt@waggytailrescue.org ##2058773##

Story
Handi is being fostered in VA. Fifteen-year-old Handi was left at a Pennsylvania shelter in April 2024 by her owners; there was suspicion of cruelty/neglect, and her owners admitted they could no longer take care of her. Handi soon came to her Virginia Blind Dog Rescue foster home. Handi is a beautiful, low-key 7-pound Schnauzer/Yorkie mix who sees and hears very little. She has been in her foster home for about a month, and has done a great job of settling in. When she first arrived, she did not seem to have an understanding of housetraining and what to do when taken outside. Her foster parents put her on a schedule of going out every 2 to 3 hours, and she has been doing a great job!! Very few accidents now! Anyone who adopts Handi will need to be prepared to continue to work on housetraining. But her quick progress has been remarkable! Handi ignores the other four dogs in the foster home and also ignores the cat. She spends most of her time napping but will sometimes wander around the house. If she bumps into another dog or if a dog bumps into her, she doesn’t mind a bit. Handi is not happy, though, with sudden movements made by people, particularly with people she does not know. When she first arrived in her foster home, she was a bit snappy when being handled but her foster parents soon learned to go very slowly and consistently let her first sniff their hand and then, when she was alert, she would get a pat on the head and then could be picked up; she has been fine with this. At the vet, because procedures there tend to be intrusive and sometimes painful, she can be snappy. Handi sleeps quietly through the night in an indoor pen and, in fact, hardly makes a sound even during the day! She enjoys attention when she gets it but is also happy to nap. She is starting to seek out her foster mom. She does well in the car; she is typically tethered in the back seat. She may wander back and forth and then relax. She does tend to tremble a lot, though, in a variety of situations, but does not seem overly bothered by car rides. She needs to be carried up and down any and all steps. There are many good things to say about Handi and her health, especially considering she is an older pup! These things include: -a dental was recently completed in May and her two lower canines were removed. She only has three teeth left (three small ones on the lower left side) which are in good shape. She eats soft food only. She LOVES to eat! -the shelter detected a Grade I-II heart murmur but, prior to her dental surgery, her ECG was sent to a cardiologist and no heart concerns were noted, including no murmur. -her eyes are currently stable; she has bilateral cataracts. -ears are clear -no luxating patellas (these are very common with small dogs but two vets have checked her legs and found her kneecaps intact at this time) -heartworm negative Handi does have some medical issues. These include: -history of IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) in 2012, pyometra in 2014, and significant liver disease in 2021. All this was prior to Handi coming to BDRA, and was on documentation the Pennsylvania shelter received on Handi from her former owners. None of these prior medical concerns is a concern at this time for Handi; her liver values from April are only slightly elevated and she is on no treatment at this time. Her current vet recommends rechecking her liver values periodically. -a tendency to rapidly extend her left hind leg (and occasionally her right). Sometimes this causes Handi to fall, and sometimes she cannot stand back up. X-rays revealed no concern besides minor arthritis so there could possibly be a neurological or spinal component causing this. She is now on Galliprant once a day, and that has worked very well so far in controlling this problem. -low grade mammary carcinoma with suspected lymphatic invasion. Because of Handi’s age, the rescue has decided not to pursue chemotherapy for Handi but will ensure she remains comfortable. Currently she is comfortable and she has no symptoms. Likely symptoms of concern would include coughing and other breathing issues. Anyone seriously interested in adopting Handi should share this information with their vet and they can also receive a copy of vet records with more details. BDRA wants to be sure any potential adopter is fully informed about Handi’s current health. Also, any adopter should understand BDRA cannot predict future medical needs for Handi or any dog. Handi has not spent time around children and would not be a candidate to be adopted into a home with young children. She would likely be easily startled by young children who often move quickly and unpredictably, and in those cases she may be snappy. Handi is looking for a most special person who wants to give her the most wonderful last chapter of her life. She will reward that person with her gentle love and will be a great companion on the sofa or in a lap. If you think you can provide Handi the forever home she so deserves, fill out an adoption application today!

Story
** Current Location: South Korea ** With Cats She is currently living with cats in a temporary foster home. She is not aggressive with cats, but she is very interested in them, so if you have a cat that likes dogs, she would be fine. With Dogs She is currently living with the dogs in her foster home without any issues. They play well with each other, are socialized, and warm up quickly to new dogs they meet. With Adults/Kids She is very fond of people and loves to be petted. She warms up quickly to people she meets for the first time. Shedding Moderate. There is shedding in certain periods. Her fur is best brushed daily with a silicone brush. Walking Manner She loves to go for walks, both familiar and new, and prefers to take fast, wide, territorial walks (rather than slow, sniffing the trails). He also loves to run in the park, but will sometimes try to run outside if there is no fence. she is fast and has a lot of energy, so she loves to run around in large parks and meet people and dogs. she also loves to go for walks in the mountains, but she has a hunting instinct and is interested in small snakes, rodents, and birds. Housetrained She goes potty on pee pads and highly prefers to go outside. She can chew on wood and plastic furniture and will grab small items that fall on the floor and play with them. She's very playful and will run around with you if you have a like-minded friend in the house. Separation Anxiety She's always been around other dogs, so we can't confirm, but we think she'll be fine on her own. Bark or Howl She barks briefly when she hears strangers outside. There is no howl Carsickness She had drooling at first, but now she rides well. Personality She's sociable and energetic. She adapts to new places right away and loves to reach out to new people and friends she meets. She knows how to say hello to familiar people and friends. She loves to play with other dogs and loves to play with people. She picks up on new training quickly, so we think she would make a great dog for a family with a good understanding and training knowledge of dogs. She's a bit of a sneaky prankster right now, so she can get into trouble, but she's affectionate, gentle, and full of energy.
