Good with dogs,
Story
Please read the pet description IN IT'S ENTIRETY before applying.  Thank you for your cooperation. STRAY NEW INTAKE 7/10/2024 This dog was found in the garage of a house off of Drexel in Shreveport.  She was posted on social media and headed to animal control when the public asked the lady to contact us.  She did and here she is.  We DID notify Caddo Parish Animal Services that we have the dog and they've registered her into their system.  This sweet girl is heavily matted with feces, and she has a cherry eye that is likely irritating her as she has scratch marks above her eye.  She is not chipped. We are considered a stray-foster until her stray hold is up. If no one comes forward once stray hold is up, she will be considered legally OUR dog.  She will be sent to the vet for vetting, to include repair of her cherry eye and then she will be placed for adoption. You must show proof this is your dog via pictures... vet records, etc. We don't go off of "see if the dog will answer to xxxx". We don't go off of someone just saying the dog is their dog. You must have PROOF!  If an owner comes forward they will be required to reclaim her through CPAS and pay the reclamation fee and hopefully they have a reasonable explanation of her condition. We do NOT take applications for dogs UNTIL they are posted for adoption provided no owner comes forward during stray.  Early applications BEFORE the dog is posted for adoption will not be processed.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.  For reference we named her Monia. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”  ~ Gandhi Be responsible ~  Always spay/neuter, keep your dogs on heartworm prevention, vaccinate against disease... and if you bring a pet into your life, commit to that pet for life.  Blessings. Good with dogs,
Story
Please read the pet description IN IT'S ENTIRETY before applying.  Thank you for your cooperation. You Tube video link:  https://youtu.be/EI-Ku1ua__s   FOR ADOPTION!   Note:  Only those with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. (For more pics, visit nr2r.petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org)   INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY: PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying: DOG APPLICATION LINK:    http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Priya (female) Intake date:   6/16/2024 Pekingese mix DOB 10/8/2018 15.10 (low-rider) pounds Adoption fee:  $250, which includes vetting, microchip Good with other dogs:  yes Cats:  unknown – we do not have cats to be able to test Vetting and other:  altered (spayed/neutered), up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm negative, fecal negative, CBC (bloodwork done – everything normal); cytopoint injection for itchy skin; on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped (NOTE:  When we initially sent her to the vet, they indicated she was running a fever possibly due to pyometra – which is infection of the uterus, so they would not do a rabies and noted to come back in a week.  What was odd is that the former owner indicated she was already spayed, so we were very confused.  Nevertheless, we sent her back the following week AND we talked to the vet tech about our concerns.  When she went back, she was running a fever again.  Nothing made sense… bloodwork was normal… white blood count in normal range, etc.  The tech put her in a kennel for her to calm down.  The car ride made her very nervous and she was panting heavily when she came in.  After some time, she took her out of the kennel and took her temp again and it was normal.  So, they gave her a rabies and of course, no pyometra because she IS spayed.  Having said that, when Priya gets excited or nervous it tends to raise her body temperature but it’s nothing to be concerned about so long as whatever is making her nervous doesn’t last long or she’s made to feel comfortable again.) Health issues:  none found – just keep an eye on her during times of stress (such as vet visits, etc.) Temperament:  very sweet – watch her video.  She is cautious at first but this girl is a sweetheart. Energy level:  low-medium Groom needs:  High;  requires regular grooming/brushing – possibly a professional groom from time-to-time. Biography:  Priya is an owner surrender.  The family is going through some life altering changes.  Here’s what her former owner had to say about her:  She’s only known one home. She is used to staying home alone while owner was at work for about 8 hours during the week. She is friendly and social once she’s comfortable. She slept in the bed with the owner or on the couch. She does get nervous on car rides (thus the whole fever thing indicated above). She hadn’t ever been on a leash while with the former owner, but we’ve been walking her and she does fine. She doesn’t know any commands but she is responsive. She barks during fireworks (don’t blame her). She will eat Christmas lights and plastic (we haven’t had any issues with her being destructive at the rescue). She does fine during grooms. She is a lap dog and loves attention. She isn’t really into playing with toys.   Now that you know all about Miss Priya, what do you think?  Could she be your new BFF?    **IMPORTANT NOTES** *We do adopt out of state provided the adopter is willing and able to travel to us once approved.  We do not ship or transport our animals and there is no exception to this rule.   *Most of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever!  We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family!   We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing.  There is no exception to this rule!   *PREDATORS:    IF THIS DOG IS UNDER 10 POUNDS, the dog is to be monitored and protected when outside at all times!  PREDATOR-THREAT IS A REAL DANGER!  For example, a hawk tried to pick up a Chihuahua owned by a friend visiting Ninna’s house… RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE VISITOR.  Thankfully the visitor was watching the dog and the hawk was wrestled off of the Chihuahua but it did require an ER visit and she is was very lucky to survive.   TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!     *NO SMALL CHILDREN!!  As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young children or a very active household is not recommended.   Many of our dogs come to us BECAUSE of small children, thus we do not rehome our dogs to homes with babies or young children.  KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU HAVE VISITING GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL!  Even if the children are older, it would depend on the child AND the parent or parents.    *HOUSETRAINING:  We do NOT guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained.   While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night.  Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home.  Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency.    *KENNELING:  We always recommend kenneling when you cannot supervise your dog.  This helps with housetraining and any destructive tendencies until you get to know your knew addition.   *We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome.  Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate.   *Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply.   If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty.  That’s our guarantee.   Other notes:  This pet is available for adoption through Ninna’s Road to Rescue, Benton, La.  We are 501c3 non-profit organization.  Our mission is to rescue primarily small-breed dogs and to re-home them into RESPONSIBLE and CARING forever homes.    DOG APPLICATION LINK:   http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Time may be of the essence if you are looking to adopt a specific animal.  We do not reserve animals, unless and until we have approved your application, provided the animal is still available at the time we receive your application.  The first APPROVED application we receive will be considered.  We are NOT a first come, first serve rescue!! We adopt our rescues out to the RIGHT home, not just A home. Only responsible pet owners need apply. Applying to adopt does NOT commit you to the adoption NOR does it guarantee the adoption. CONTACT:  Our adoptable pets are updated regularly, but if you want to check the availability of a pet... (For more pics, visit nr2r.petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org)   INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY: PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying: DOG APPLICATION LINK:    http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Hobbes (male) Intake date:   5/27/2024 Pekingese Approx 8 years old 9.8 VERY THIN pounds Adoption fee:  $225, which includes vetting, microchip Good with other dogs:  yes Cats:  unknown – we do not have cats to be able to test Vetting and other:  altered (spayed/neutered), up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm negative, fecal negative, dental performed, x-ray (grade 6 heart murmur – see “health issues” below); on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped Health issues:  Grade 6 heart murmur;  on following medications for life Lasix 20mg 1 tablet 2Xday (Chewy.com is .05 per pill = $1.50 a month) Enalapril 2.5mg 1 tablet 2Xday (Chewy.com is .13 per pill = $3.90 a month) Pimobendan aka Vetmedin 2.5mg 1/2 tablet 2Xday (Chewy.com is .87 per pill = about $17.40 a month) (Some supply will be given at time of adoption – above prices are always subject to change but shouldn’t be by much – check with your vet for price matching)   Temperament:  Watch his video… LOL!  He’s a talker – he will argue with you – and tell you like it is!  If you’re up for a daily debate, he’s the doggo for you! Energy level:  medium Groom needs:  High;  requires regular brushing and grooming – he will mat up easily Biography:  Hobbes came from a municipal shelter.  He has a story to tell but it is sensitive in nature, and we cannot post publicly.  What we can say is that he is a double-barrel pistol!  There is just something so comical about a dog that appears to be arguing with you or talking back.  His video shows that side of him.  LOL!  Around here, we love a Pekingese.  They just have the most entertaining personalities.  Hobbes does well in a kennel if needed and walks ok on a leash.  He’s a flat-faced toot that will give any home much-needed excitement!  Ideally, he’d like a home with someone who will challenge his daily commentaries, send him to law school and pay of his student loans.  Not much to ask.  If you you’re looking for your next college kid, we welcome your application.  At least this one doesn’t have laundry for you to do! Flat-faced (Brachycephalic) dogs and over-heating:  Brachycephalic dogs are prone to overheating and heatstroke, as their facial conformation prohibits effective cooling. Short-faced dogs should stay cool during hot weather, opting for exercise during early mornings and after the sun goes down rather than during the hottest part of the day. In the southern states, you'll need to really wait until fall, spring or winter.  The summer months in the south, really don't cool enough in morning or evening to take a flat-faced dog for a walk.  You can also help by walking them on a harness instead of attaching the leash to the dog’s collar. Temperament:  very sweet, but scared, not used to human touch;  may panic if spooked – needs adopter committed to helping him learn his new life (he’s already come so far while with us) Energy level:  low-medium Groom needs:  High;  requires regular professional grooming, along with intermittent brushing to avoid matting (When he came to us, he was HEAVILY MATTED… with thick mats glued to his skin with urine, feces and who knows what else.  We wanted to save his mane and tail so we worked to brush out with a razor comb all the matting and he really seemed to enjoy it.  We shaved down what we could of the matting but the parts that were glued to his skin, we let the vet handle while he was sedated for neutering.  It wasn’t that he was fighting us, because he wasn’t… it was that they were so glued to the skin, we were afraid we would hurt him… so we stopped and let the vet handle it.) Biography:  Micro is a breeder release with Lava via a rescue friend.  This poor guy came to us in such bad shape but look at him now!  What a difference.  Micro has spent his entire life as a breeder dog and his new chapter began the day we took him in.   He is very shy and if in a situation where he gets spooked, he will panic.  When he first came to us, he would alligator roll on the leash but if you watch the video, that has changed.  It’s likely he’s not had much human contact in his life but that changed the day he came to us.  We recommend a lot of leash walking, handling, petting, treating, etc., because that is what is going to bond him to you.   What we have found over the years with dogs like Micro is that once they get in a home with one person who is committed to their happiness and enriching their life, these dogs come out of their shells.  He may never be one to give you kisses but we believe he will begin to snuggle and want to be near you.  We see it time and time again with breeder dogs.  Even some of our own volunteers have adopted dogs like Micro and we see what happens once they are in a home but it does take time and patience.  Micro does fine in a kennel and in fact, providing him a place to go if he needs space would be a good thing.  You can even leave the kennel door open so he can come and go.    Below is a paragraph to help you understand breeder dogs:   (This may or may not be typical of this particular dog.)   Some retired breeder dogs or dogs that have come from a hoard situation are different than your typical dog that have grown up in a home.  Many don’t understand human affection, touch, handling or even being picked up.  Some may have only been picked up by the nape of the neck as you would lift a puppy.   They typically don’t understand a leash or the sights and sounds of a home.   Many have spent their entire lives in a kennel and/or in a nasty environment and many have only lived outdoors.  They are used to eating, sleeping, defecating and urinating in their kennel or wherever.  In some breeder operations, the dogs are hosed down while in their kennels.  Many breeder dogs spin when anxious, nervous, afraid or even happy because they are used to being only in a kennel with limited mobility.  It may take months or years before they can overcome their past.  In some cases, they really never do… but they can learn to accept your love and affection.  If you love doggie kisses, you may never get one… but you can teach them to kiss by offering a treat for a kiss.   These dogs aren’t broken, they just need someone with a big enough heart, the time, the patience and enough compassion to help them navigate their new world.  These dogs are not for everyone and it’s important to us that we find them the RIGHT home, not just a home.   If you think you can help Micro and change his life, we welcome your application.  Note:  He’s really captured all of our hearts so you’ll have to be pretty special to adopt him.
