Adopting a Pointer

Frequently asked questions about acquiring an Pointer - the pros and cons of adopting versus going through a breeder, and associated costs.

You can adopt a Pointer at a much lower cost than buying one from a breeder. The cost of adopting a Pointer can range from $50 to $300 in order to cover the expenses of caring for your new buddy before adoption. This fee typically includes an initial exam, preventatives, heartworm testing and treatment, microchipping, and spay/neuter. In contrast, buying Pointers from breeders can be quite expensive. Depending on their breeding, they can cost $600 to $2,000.

The easiest way to adopt a Pointer is through a rescue that specializes in Pointers. A great place to start is with a breed search on Adopt a Pet. The search will show you all the available Pointers in your area.

Pointer fun facts

Fun Facts:

A purebred (English) Pointer named Judy was the only dog ever officially recognized as a Prisoner of War during World War II. The Japanese captured her when her ship was torpedoed.

Pointers were one of the first 8 breeds to be formally recognized and registered in the United States.

The Pointer has been referred to as "The Cadillac of bird dogs." The Pointer was bred to track and locate bird game and then freeze while "pointing" towards the prey. Then, a Greyhound would chase the prey and capture it before the hunter arrived.
