Story
Rosie is a senior Shiba Inu who ended up at Animal Control after her human passed away in her home, and no one knew for some time. Her extended family tried to keep her for a few days, but she can be a bit snappy with people she doesn’t know. When the DC SIR Volunteer picked her up she was put into a crate for transport. She doesn’t like crates and let everyone know. When her foster dad picked her up at the transfer location, she snapped and snarled. Luckily, her new foster dad didn't have a crate and allowed her to lean on him and cuddle on his lap on part of the drive. Fortunately, her foster parents have worked with fearful and reactive dogs, so they knew how to build gain her trust. She can go in and out to their backyard to potty without issue. She loves all the yummy raw food her foster parents give her; she can gently take treats from them, but will growl if she thinks they might get too close. Her foster parents see that she is a sweet girl who needs savvy adopters who will take the time to earn her trust so that I can feel safe to be herself. She may not be a big cuddler, but she can bring happiness to a family that will take the time to give her a loving home. Story
Hi everyone, my name is now Summer. My foster parents picked my name for the Fourth of July/ Freedom theme because my personality is inspired by the warmth you feel in the late evening of Independence Day when you smell food grilling and Shibas barking! I am a 4-year-old red female Shiba Inu! I was rescued with 8 other Shiba Inus from an AR breeding facility. I lived my entire life in a 4’ x 6’ pen without toys, a soft bed or grass under my feet. When I arrived at Shiba HQ, I was very scared and confused and huddled in a corner with the other Shibas who traveled with me. The volunteers noticed that a very scared black and tan Shiba kept cuddling behind me in the corner of the yard, so DC SIR decided to keep us together in a foster home. We are the only dogs in the home, but I am learning to trust people and enjoy my new freedom! You’ll see videos of me dancing around in the grass! I am so happy to have a lot of space to run and play in! In just 4 days, I have learned to go downstairs (not up yet), watch for wildlife through the windows, and discovered the joy of play. Each day, my confidence grows when go on walks, take in the warm sun on my face, and smell the trails that other dogs have been on. Lastly, my appetite is finally growing, and I have mastered going to the bathroom outside! I will need to have full medical before I am available for adoption. If you think I am a good fit for your family, go ahead and apply to adopt me! I look forward to enjoying a life of freedom! Story
Hi everyone, my name is now Hope. My name is a Fourth of July/ Freedom theme, which is what our Country has given so many people. I am an 8-year-old red female Shiba Inu who was just rescued from an Arkansas breeding facility with 8 other Shiba Inu. I was nervous about this new life and all the strange sights and sounds. Feeling the grass under my feet gave me hope for a better life. I pranced on the grass and explored the yard at Shiba HQ. I lived my whole life in a 4 x 6 run, so this new world can be a bit scary. Luckily, I got to go to a foster home with another Shiba Inu, DC SIR alum, Shiloh, who was also rescued from a large Midwest breeding facility last year. My foster parents think I am even more confident than Shiloh! I warmed up quickly to my foster pawrents and sisfur and I love to run around and explore all the new things! I am still being potty trained, but I will catch on to this quickly! I still need to be spayed, and I will also need to have dental work, so make sure to wish me luck for a safe and speedy surgery! I think you will be able to see how happy I am in my videos. DC SIR said I was great at body handling during my shower! I didn’t even mind having my nails trimmed, but I wasn’t that excited about it either. I know my foster pawrents need a few items to help me adjust to my new life, so they have an Amazon Wish List just for me! If you could help send me a couple of goodies I promise to dance and prance for you in a video! Story
Hi everyone, my name is now Indy, short for Independence, which my foster parents picked for my Fourth of July name! I was rescued with 8 other Shiba Inus from an AR breeding facility. I am a 5-yr-old B & T Shiba I & was lactating when I got to DC SIR. The facility said I didn’t have puppies so maybe it is a false pregnancy. I was one of the more fearful Shibas that arrived at Shiba HQ. I always ran to hide behind the other Shibas when I was outside. The DC SIR volunteers noticed I kept gravitating to one of the female Shibas, Summer, so they decided to keep me with her since one of the foster homes could take two of us. I was very good in my bath and nail trim, but I will scramble away unless you approach me slowly for body handling. Since arriving in my foster home, I prefer to tuck myself into a corner or under a blanket to feel secure. When I am outside, I pace the perimeter, looking for ways to escape, or I try digging under the fence. I am feeling more secure now, and I am less focused on escaping. I am learning to be more confident through Summer's example. While I am not required to be adopted with Summer, DC SIR thinks I would benefit from living with another friendly and confident dog. I will need to be spayed and have dental work done before I am available for adoption. However, if you think I am a good fit for your family, you can apply to adopt me, and we can have a meet and greet before my surgery. I also have an Amazon Wish List for items to help me transition to my life of Freedom! Story
Hi everyone, my name is now Libby, which is short for “Liberty,” which my mom picked for the 4th of July theme! I am the only puppy from the AR breeding facility pull. DC SIR was told last minute that I was being surrendered to rescue because I could not be sold online because of a Grade 3 luxating patella. DCSIR was told that I was put in a concrete pen by myself to help fix my leg. I am a 16-week-old female sesame Shiba Inu. I was so happy to arrive at Shiba HQ and receive the attention that I so desperately craved! I am a tall, goofy girl! I was also so skinny that you could feel every bone of my body jutting from under my skin. DC SIR is feeding me nutrient-dense food every couple of hours to prevent any long-term damage from not receiving enough sustenance. I was so happy to be out and around other dogs that I couldn’t control myself, so I kissed and pranced all over everyone. I have calmed down, and the adult dogs are teaching me manners around other dogs. I am a high-energy goofball, and my favorite toy is the flirt pole! I am getting Red Light Therapy sessions a couple of times daily to help my leg and nutritive therapy. The good news is that the vet says I only have a Grade 2 luxating patella! I have also reduced limping since coming into rescue. See more on this condition here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnIT2IUdGS0 In the meantime, I am getting the best supportive care to help me be a healthy pup! Follow my story and apply to adopt me if you think I am a good fit for your family!
